Just noticed that Mountain Hardware have announced some new Synthetic bags, called "Hyperlaminar".

Thought this may be of interest to those of us who don't use down.

They are pretty much what I wanted from a Synthetic bag, apart from one minor issue.

THEY ARE BRIGHT YELLOW! and ORANGE :(

Not exactly ideal for a quiet stealth camp.

Light Blue with a red interior isn't much better. I was expecting the to be a little lighter and compact as well. :(

Nope, they really don't. Sorry.

I also find it really annoying when you've climbed to the top of the mountain to enjoy the view of the wilderness, only to find some selfish ******* has pitched a BRIGHT ORANGE tent in the middle of the view. It's visual pollution, and IMHO, is no different to leaving your litter on the mountain top...

As for centre zip, as I roll with the bag (oh god please don't open this can of worms again), I find it works better.. But that's just me.

I wonder what that would do to the fabric/insulation...

J

One would hope it darkens it.

Can't imagine it'd do anything bad to the insulation, it's only dye so you're effectively washing it but using dye instead of soap suds.

Can't say as the colours bother me, all sleeping bags look the same when i'm asleep inside them.
But if the colour is the only thing that's putting you off buying this bag i'd either get a cover or dye it.

Can't say as i've ever come across anyone camped on the top of any mountain i've ever been up to be honest.
Come to think of it i can't remember ever seeing a bright orange tent either.

The littering comment is just plain daft though.
I'm guessing by your reckoning we should all wear dark colours when hiking as well, cause i'd hate for your view to the top be spoilt by my bright red jumper.

Personally i buy what i think is best for me and that i like best, if i wanted a tent but it was only available in bright orange then can't say as it'd bother me.
If it bothered anyone else they're welcome to pitch further away, which is probably a good reason to buy a tent that colour anyways as it drives me crazy when people pitch their tents near mine, they've got a entire mountain fer Christ sake o_O

But if water can get into the insulation, then so can the dye, and it may take up space meant for air to be, thus effecting insulation.

I was more thinking of standing on the mountain, looking at the view and finding the bright Orange tent in the middle of it, on the hillside opposite.

I found a tent pitched on top of Pen-y-Fan last summer. It was green, but it could have been fluorescent pink, given the guys sat outside it were from Hereford...

Yep, I do actually. It spoils the view. Sorry.

Lol. An orange tent pitched 10ft from mine would be prefered to it being 500 yards away, that way it wouldn't be in my photos from the campsite... Or atleast I'd only have to walk 15 feet to take an unspoilt shot...

Can't say as i understand, so the insulation is dyed black it's not like it's not dyed or bleached in colour before.
As i say the colour doesn't bother me, if it's only the colour preventing you from buying buy a cover and use that.

Not sure if you're half joking or trying to fish for a argument today, but what do you do in Autumn with all those bright red, orange and green trees?

That's odd, how were they advertising where they were from?

Yep, I do actually. It spoils the view. Sorry.

No need to apologise to me, doesn't bother me in the slightest as i wear whatever i want, if folks have problems with that it's up to them to sort themselves out.
Of course they do have the option of asking me to remove my bright red top, the phrase "short shrift" springs to mind though.

I can't say as any ones choice of clothing colour or tent colour has even registered on my radar, it's not even something that i even notice.
Most days i don't even notice what colour clothing i'm wearing never mind anyone else.

I have requested folks to pitch a bit further away though when there was miles of flat ground and they pitched their tent 5m from mine, no idea what colour their sleeping bag was though.

I think if the colour of clothing, sleeping bags or tents that other people buy bothers you then the problem is yours rather than theirs, as complaining about other peoples tent, jumper, sleeping bags colours is unreasonable to the point of being ****ty.

But as a bloke i'll give you the benefit of doubt as it might be a woman thing.

My understanding is that synthetic insulation is hollow, as in hollow tubes, Pour dye down the middle, and you a) take up some of the volume, and b) potentially seal the ends.

Take photos of them. They blend nicely together. An Orange tent stands out, even in those conditions.

That's odd, how were they advertising where they were from?

Well, the guy I chatted to kinda confirmed it when I asked what the guys turning up every 5 mins to check in gave it away.

They were doing a Long drag up and down Pen-y-Fan. When we got to the end of our hike we found 3 that hadn't succeeded. Poor sods, they looked very ****** off.

Yep. It annoys me, I think it's selfish. But it's a free country, and I'm sure there are things I do that are annoying to others and they think are selfish. I hold this opinion, I don't go around telling people off when I find their orange tents in the hills. It just annoys.

I am a photographer, my primary purpose for being in the wilderness is to photograph it. Hence it's bloody annoying if someone buggers up that photo.

I am not going to stop anyone buying/wearing/pitching anything bright coloured. I am going to find it selfish that they spoil the natural environment with visual pollution. Would you accept someone building 1 bright orange wind turbine every 100m across the whole of the cape wrath trail?

But as a bloke i'll give you the benefit of doubt as it might be a woman thing.

No need for that if you go with Teepee and his ORANGE!!! tarp

On the plus, his tarp attracted 90% of the midges so that was good :)

Julia,

You are a very strange person, but unlike you with anyone that dares to wear bright colours, i think that strange just adds to the tapestry of the world.
The world we lived in today was imagined by weird strange folk that had the determination to see their weird ideas through to fruition, odd things like flying into space, visiting the moon, particle accelerators, satellites used for communication, X-ray systems, electricity, even the media we are communicating on, the t'net or computers no doubt were seen as odd or weird before they were invented.
So there is space for weird in my world.

Even though I'm not really a visual person i can imagine how boring the world would be if everyone started to wear subtle colours all the time.
Of course it's your choice to get annoyed at whatever you chose to get annoyed with, i think for your well being though it might be worth revisiting your opinion on bright colours being worse than littering as it does come across as a bit mental.

With regards to the orange wind turbine, i think ALL wind turbines are daft so i'm not really colour biased one way or t'other.

As a women, we tend to live our lives being told things by men...

Not really sure what you mean on the "told things by men" thing, me Mum is a female and even though i'm 46 she still tries to tell me how to do things :D
At least 50% of the teachers at school were chicks, my boss is a bloke but his boss is a chick.
One of the kids is a male the other is female, i've got 5 nieces and one nephew, the oldest is 6 so they're all a bit bossy :D
Plus there is my Mrs who is female, but of course she's NEVER bossy (just in case she reads this :D:D:D:D)
Ohhh and i know we're not allowed to mention politics but i think it fits in that i grew up with Thatcher in power.

So that might be another opinion that's worth revisiting?

But to be honest i'm surrounded by strong, confident woman who i'm 100% certain would do something or say something if they felt men were telling them to do something they didn't want to do.

The world is what you make of it

I must be weird as i recon his tarp brightens up the whole picture.

Must be nice waking up to a nice orange glow in the mornings as well

I despair of the dullness endemic in the way the British dress. Walk down most high streets and it looks like everyone is going to funeral - grim - does it reflect our general state of mind ??.
I think most Brits are afraid of colour. Africans would be completely bemused by the lack of colour in our clothing .
