Sleeping bag upgrade

I've got a rab ascent 700. It weighs 1558g with stuff sack. I'm looking to loose as many grams as I can afford. I'm probably looking to get a comfort level of around -8. What's out there?

Cumulus Panyam 450 -7C 835g €259
Cumulus Panyam 600 -13C(ambitious..) 1000g €299

You'll struggle to beat these for combination of value and quality. You could look at Alpkits Pipedream range or if moneys no object Western Mountaineering (e.g Ultralite)

Not been cold enough but I swapped my winter bag for the Panyam 600 sure it will be very warm.i use a wm Summerlite most of the year and even after 5 years it's superb and that was s/h too. If money no problem I'd buy the one paul linked in

I sold my WM Ultralite as it was getting a bit tight around the shoulders for me. The WM Alpinlite has a couple more inches girth if you're on the big side.

Would you all agree that wm are top of the game then? I'm looking at lightening my load as much as possible starting with pack and sleeping bag. In the future I'd be looking at a summer bag as well. Would the summerlite and ultralite be a good combo? I'm only 5'4 and not too broad so I probably won't need the alpinlite.

The WM Ultralite is a great bag (the no snag zip is a real boon for the weak-bladdered ).

This said, I've not used mine in the two years I have had a Zpacks 20.

The Ultralite can be used year round. If you get too warm, unzip, use as a quilt, and stick a leg out.

For summer use I like my Montbell spiral down hugger #5 as it's around 8oz lighter than the Ultralite but stretches to be useable with extra clothing on if you camp high on a clear cool night. In my opinion the stitched through summerlite is overpriced and under-insulated for UK hill use.

Love my old Montbell down hugger No5.
:inlove:

The DWR is exceptional, as are the elasticated baffles. The elastic adds weight, but increases the loft markedly by contorting the shell to make it loft higher.

For the lightest system, a down half quilt/bag and down jacket is the ultimate.

Bit expensive but i'm chuffed to ****** with my Katabatic Gear flex quit

I recon it's better made than any of my PHD bags and as good if not better than my brothers WM bag.
It weighs 547g and i've been toasty warm to just above freezing (commando)

Was a bit wary of quilts but now i'm sold, i've not used my PHD bags since i bought it

I've got a WM Ultralite, which I was lucky enough to pick up second hand. It's a lovely bag and become a favourite for colder weather.

What would people's thoughts be on getting the 5'6 version of the ultralite? I'm 5'4 in height. The weight difference is 795g with 425g fill over 820g with 455g fill.

I'm 5' 3". Yes, get the short version of whatever sb you buy. Less weight, less space (in pack and in tent), better fit. Only downside is if you decide to sell-on there will be fewer potential buyers.

PS Ben …….just checking…..I am assuming you are not a youngster and still growing ?? :angelic:

Hi Ben,
I'm same height and I had the 5' 6"Ultralite...plenty of space, in fact a bit too much for me.
You shudda' bought mine......

Plenty warm enough for 3 seasons.
You can shake the down around in this bag so its all on top of you...big advantage.
Fabulous non-snagging zip.
I prefer W M Bags to PHD's now.
Can use the Ultralite unzipped in Summer as a Quilt.....versatile features.

Hope that helps you.
