Atom Packs

Bottom pockets rock if you don't have hip belt pockets. Ks50 uses tx07 which is vx without the inner face for pack body. Shorter life but how many thousands of miles will you hike this year?
My last pack I went with x21rc back and bottom.
Vx07 4.8osy 70 d
X21rc 4.4osy 210d

What's the saving between 07 and 21 for a pack like this? 50g?

I know we all like to chase those grams but I'm happier with 21 and durability on this bit of kit. I can always get my hair cut before a trip and save about the same weight

Doubt it's much more that that. Circa 110 Vs 160gsm.

I am not obsessive (honest:oops:) I don't trim every strap and drill holes in my toothbrush but if there is weight that can be saved then I may as well try unless there is a significant durability tradeoff.

That said, I have just realised I can save 200g this weekend just by taking my old and much repaired cashmere gardening jumper instead of my monkeyman fleece, it still does not make up for taking a 1.7kg pack with me though :(

I think you’ll be fine with the vx07 for the body of the pack, as above maybe avoid it for the straps and belt and go 21 there.

I think Pa’lante moved away from the 07 for their straps as after significant use some of them started to tear a little?

That's what I heard. I'd go dxg on straps if the option was there.
What ever you make the temptation is always there to think, well it'll be stronger and only 50g heavier... That way lies DOOM! :)
I suspect if you did wear through it atom would repair it for you with whatever fabric you'd like.

Black vx07 body, straps, hipbelt.
Black vx21 base.
Pa'lante bottom pocket
2x stretch strap pockets
2 X vx07 hip belt pockets.
Extra large side pockets
The larger harder wearing mesh for the front.
Added "pirate" features :whistling:
Lowe alpine style pole holding mod.
Carbon frame
Padded back

Still to decide....
Vx07, 21 or cordura back panel? Am erring towards vx07.
45 or 50L?
Colourway? Orange or blue stripe round the base, orange or blue compression tabs, orange or black shock cord.
Straight or slanted back pocket?
Extra fastening in centre of back pocket a'la @Foxster
James I have 21 material on my pack if you want to see before you chose

@Enzo me neither.

durability was never the brief but it just crept in as this lot started instilling a creeping paranoia in me :nailbiting: surely they should be pushing the wightest whispyest gossamer thin materials so i can aim for a sub 500g pack.

i started off trying to persuade Tom to make me a liteskin pack in LS07/21 mix. if it gets 10 days loaded use a year i will be lucky.

if this one goes well i think i will try and get a 30L LS07 pack made, maybe an Atom. i really like the one @octagon lent me so if i could just get ine made upuwith a proper hipbelt as well (personal preference) that would probably fulfill all my pack requirements

Really uncertain if the Atom will be large enough for me, my bw without pack is around 4.5kg and after having tried to measure the volume without being able to compress it much nor pack it in a backpack it looks like I'm at ~25L. Feels like it would get really tight if I would need food for 7 days...

Looks as if the Prospector would work better for you than The Atom.

With food for a week I'd want a proper hipbelt. From what I've seen his packs look generously sized for their quoted capacity though.

Yeah but I see the Atom as being better in the future since I'll keep on upgrading my kit. I want to go for the removable carbon frame and hipbelt option so I have the option of going frameless when I improve my current heavy and cheap clothing.

Tom thinks the Atom with a removable frame and anatomical hipbelt would be better for my "future" compared to a Prospector but right now it's the volume I'm concerned with. I'll be going on a 23 day thru hike and for the first section I'll have to carry food for 7 days and after that I'll resupply every 4 days.

That would be quite a nice pack.

The 40l has about 35l in the main pocket with the collar fully extended (leaving 3 turns worth to close it) and that does swallow quite a bit, not tried to fit a large amount of food into mine yet. You've 5l for the 2 side pockets plus however much you decide to fit in the mesh pockets - Tom doesn't count those in the capacity which I really like.

If it's a one off need to carry 7-day's worth food, I'd seriously consider going with the Atom and look for ways to strap on a stuff sack or too with gear that you'd normally have inside the pack for that first section. Personally, I dislike strapping things to the outside, but sometimes it's the sensible thing to do.

Yes that's my line of thought as well, 7 days won't be the norm in the future and this will be for the first week so I can bring less food. Also when calculating the volume there are things like the rain jacket and tent that I will most likely store outside the pack so it might work without too much trouble.

Yes when calculating the volume it's with things like tent and rain jacket which I could/will store outside so I might survive because 7 days without resupply won't be the norm.

First day's food in the bottom pocket, Gatewood Cape in back pocket and still loads of space. :D

I have a similar baseweight and I've managed to fit it (just) in a 25l daypack before for an overnight. The 40l Atom fits my stuff and maybe 4-5 days food I think. Anything more than that would have to go in hip-belt pockets, the bottom pocket or strapped somewhere.

How much does your food usually weigh? Do you keep things like your tent and rain jacket outside the pack?
