Sleeping bag cover

I like to use a cover on my bag on my winter adventures, more to keep my bag clean than anything whilst in bothies. I use an Alpkit Hunka. I was wondering if there were any lighter weight options, as I'm not planning on sleeping outside in it.

The Hunka is about 330g. and I have seen a PHD cover at 154g which looks like a good option - if a little expensive.

Any ideas, for something lightweight, compact which doesn't involve rustling like a bag of crisps. I dare say I could simply do without one and save some weight, but I'm happier keeping my nice yellow bag clean : ). and the hunka does give me a level of extra protection too in my tent.

I made my own from some lightweight trilaminate dustsheet, couldn't think of a better material to use. Dust, dirt and water resistant..amazingly breathable and just about strong enough not to rip in use for a good few weeks of use, weighed 90g with the centre zip.

With no zip, it'd come in at 80g.

Cheers folks. Nothing coming up much less than the PHD for price and weight at the moment and I can't spot any Cumulus ones. I might have a look at a DIY option if I can gauge the finished weights and decide on a material - and find someone round here with a machine.

Thanks Shewie. I notice he makes a lightweight sleeping bag liner in 10D nylon at 75g. Not knowing what that material looks or feels like - it might even work as a cover possibly being as its rectangular and not mummy shaped. Or maybe a lightweight sleeping bag cover is something he would consider. Just checking some weights for my spreadsheet tells me that my snugpak paratex liner that I take every year is 210g! surely not. (goes off to find some scales...)

On the cheaper end, I noticed that Sports Direct (boo) do a Karrimor one which is a gnats lighter than the Hunka at 285g. I could chop the top off if I wanted to save some weight! which for £30 is something I would be concerned about doing.

Thats an interesting site - English is shown with the US flag, and they have a cumulus jacket called a windy Wendy!

I have the Cumulus Ultralight Pertex Bivi. Used it on the TGO. Fits over a large / wide STS mat and Quilt. Keeps out ant draughts, keeps the bag / quilt clean during dossing. Also keeps on condensation off of your bag should you touch the inner.
I removed the neck drawstring as I never used it. Very happy with it.

Cheers. Glad I'm not the only one who uses a cover to keep things clean and help prevent any frost issues on multi dayers.

Handy when the dog comes with or when its quite wet, cold, windy etc.

I have found too that it helps when the wind is blowing through quite hard on a snowy cold camp. My sleeping bag combo handles a winter camp mostly, but occasionally I do feel the cold, so anything to improve matters is welcome, and worth the extra weight in my pack.

That sounds really good. Is this the material?

Presumably your mat goes inside? and is your zip at the side?

Edit: just seen you say "centre" zip, so it's probably in the centre

:D

It's not the same, but I've seen similar stuff and it could well be even better as it's tougher. I think Tom found the same stuff I used, it's made by Pro-Dec and pure white.

I saw the Pro Dec but only seemed to be available in America (on eBay anyway)

I've had a 140gr pertex style (not sure what it is) biwi from Phd for a while which does the job but ideally I'd like a quilt cover that has a footbox and otherwise follows the quilt shape and attaches with little toggles. I got a sheet from the link @Teepee sent me but not had time to do anything with it. But the stuff looks promising...

I've been thinking along the same lines since I got my quilt, something to slip over the box foot to hold it in place but then just spread out over the quilt to protect it from moisture from the dog or when under a tarp/trailstar. Will have to get one of those drop cloths.

Don't know if it would work but I bought a driducks poncho. Mainly to check out the wpb fabric. The jackets seem very popular in the states and I thought I might make a bivvi top out of it. If you want a wpb cover they might be worth a go and could double as a backup wp for when your dwr gets overwhelmed or for Paramo.

Those Driducks ponchos are huge, aren't they? And very easy to tape for those less keen on sewing. The main downside, apart from a reported lack of durability, is that the material is quite bulky.
