I pack a few specific things - rain kit, first aid, water filter, gas canister - in the front pocket. Food weights probably 800g/day? I haven't actually packed that much food in there, just eyeballing the remaining space!

Alright I see. I feel like the Atom would fit me just fine with my expected total pack weights but not sure about the volume... How much food could you fit in the bottom pocket? Almost a days worth?

I can get most of a day's food down there, everything except breakfast, all packed in a ziplock.

Hmm ok, next year I'll thru hike through Sweden and it looks like I'll have to carry food for the first 180 km but after that I'll be able to manage with 3-6. Hopefully 4-5 days worth of food fits ok.

Don't you find though that bulk goes through phases? I mean, its low when you pack, then the first morning after camping the bulk increases by 25%, then drops a bit each day as the food is used up.

So, I'd be a tad wary if you can just fit everything in an Atom before setting off. I mean, you might spot a nice cuckoo clock along the way and have no room for souvenirs!

Yeah my brain tells me that going for a 50L Prospector would be the smartest choice but a man can dream :(

I'm trying to convince Tom to make me a 45L Atom :)

I’m confused by all this. I thought the atom is a frameless pack but you’re having it modded to include a removable frame and you want it 45l, bigger than an atom, so why not the 45l prospector which is already the right size and already has a frame?

You get a proper padded hipbelt with the prospector that you don't get on the atom and the mesh used on the atom is more stretchy but less robust

I was originally planning on getting the Prospector but Tom said that since the weights I'll be carrying are quite low and that he would recommend me getting the Atom with those features instead so that I could forgo the frame in the future if I want to. It is also cheaper than the Prospector.

I don't know what the older prospectors came with, but I can take the frame and back padding out of mine easily, essentially making it into a big atom with a hipbelt...

I see, but if so it doesn't really matter if the modded Atom is basically the same but cheaper?

I’m in the middle of negotiating to send my uncomfortable arcHaul back to zpacks and have ordered a prospector 45l with narrower and more closely spaced straps than standard. Otherwise I’m Exos 4 Ever ♥️which is ok I suppose.

I think once you add a hipbelt to the atom it becomes such a hybrid of the two there is no point thinking of one it as one or the other.

I should be able post some pictures of mine soon. I am just loading it up with cushions and prancing round the kitchen at the moment.

True, I'm going to go with what Tom recommends. He feels that something between the Atom and Prospector would be better instead of choosing one.

Yes that's why I have to make my mind up fast so his lead times don't increase until I get my order in :)

I ordered and paid way in advance if making my mind up on what I wanted, just so I could book a slot.

Tom says a 45L atom would be possible free of charge. I'm still going back and forth on getting the modified Atom or the 50L Prospector.... When it says on the Prospector page that "Optional shoulder pockets available at 13g ea", does that mean they are included in the price or do you have to pay for them?
  22. fluffkitten

    IIRC they're £5 each.

If the extra 5L us coming from extending the extension collar then I'd go for that... If you really think you need it.

I think he said he could increase the circumference with 3 inches extra fabric

Size increase up to a maximum of 40l is from increasing the collar, thereafter it is from increasing thickness/depth of pack, so if you want a mid size pack then 40l + 5 litres in the 2 side pockets, 45l total, is the max. Which is pretty much the same as the ArcBlast because Atom doesn't include the volume that can fit into the net pocket and zpacks does include it.
