I was a hiker before a runner, it was going ultralite that led me to it.
I'm more of a fastpacker than an ultra runner. I only did my 1st half marathon a few months ago...then made the jump to getting distance in.
You can wear the thinner ultralight running jackets an shirts etc as your pack should be a lot less likely to stress the materials as your 'trekkin-lite'.
I'm not in it for times, it's more distance and beating the trail and smiling at the heavy hikers as I flit along the paths heading for a bivi with the lightest, most functional gear I can afford.
I am starting to take it serious , without losing track of the enjoyment .

Without derailing this thread...it makes me laugh that some of the ultra racers and distance trail runners packs that are low volume are almost as heavy as some of you folks's 30+ litre packs !

Even I've found myself having a little jog once in a while, trying to average over 4mph on my hikes, walking i top out at 3.7 so a little jog on the easy bits does it.

3.7 is good going, I don't know what your trails are like ? But to achieve that over some of the trails I use would be good going, with any pack above 2kg , very good going.
For me,it all depends on the trail and elevation, how many pictures I take, how much navigation and how slow my water refills take when needed.
The only time I'm concerned with speed is if I may have some distance to cover in the dark. I'm working on that not being as much of an issue....I need to start running with more weight in my pack though.

That’s heavy for a 45L pack
Yes and no. There are lighter packs, but not many of them include a lid and a frame sheet and even fewer are from a mainstream company. For comparison, the Gossamer Gear Gorilla is a 40 litre pack and weighs 867g in size medium.
I don't actually own one so I don't know how good it is, but the price (from Second Life) is decent.

its getting a bit daft when a 45l sac at 830g is classed as too heavy. Whats an equivalent accessorised Prophet?...700g? Hardly a back breaking difference.

True but with new materials its becoming a reality without the need for Cuben fibre, take my Hyberg 55L complete with padded back insert weighing at 625grams with plenty of features.

If you want a Rig 7 then £79 is a whole lot better than £99. I know its a while ago but TGO and Trail magazine both give it best buy 5 stars. I don't have one myself but have had my eye on one as 8' x 9' is a good size for one without a bivvy bag and also good for 2. The mid panel tie outs make the Rig 7 better than most similar tarps and the weight isn't disastrous for a tarp built from 30d cordura silnylon.

If you or anyone else is interested I have a Rig 7 for sale. I bought it to give tarping a go but I prefer my Telemark tent, so it's only been used once. I'm asking £65 inc. postage.
