Coffee on the go

Jww

Thru Hiker
So a while back think it was the coffee in a tube thread, we were discussing various coffee making method

ATM I use the coffee tea bag things

But bearing in mind I have this at home

It feels a bit wrong to use bags

Now I could take a v60 paper etc but wondering what sort of things people use to get good results.

Seen as it's winter going to have plenty time to brew lol

As a reference point, I have an E61 machine at home and espresso is my coffee of choice.

When camping I either pre-grind some coffee and use a V60 filter (the Tetra Drip) or use coffee bags.

I'm not a great fan of filter drip coffee but the results are fine and other methods are heavy and / or messy. I would prefer a cafetiere but managing the waste (leave no trace) would be tedious. I once took an Aeropress, which works well and leaves a solid puck, so easy clean up, but it is too heavy and bulky for me.

I feel instant is a step too far and would prefer to do without coffee in that case!

When I have coffee grinders and fresh coffee at home, I should be taking that 😂

Thinking this may work

That is what I use, ultralight and cheap
[Edit - I think I also saw quite a good review when compared with other V60 filter holders, so it seems a good coffee maker in its own right, not compromising much by being light and packable.]

Yeah I was lucky enough to be a pre release tester for niche on the duo

So I have both niche grinders and have settled with a decent. I've had a couple of espresso machines, but had quite a bit of bad luck buying new that came faulty.

Did look at aero pressure but too much faff, thing that drip thing may be best.

I happen to have a Niche too (the original version)...

I use this GSI pour-over:

Used to use it as a proper pour over suspended above the mug, but needed a paper filter to slow it down and it requires too much attention. Now I just place the entire net filter in my mug with the grounds, pour the water in through the grounds, and let it steep to taste (5 minutes maybe?). Ends up a combo of pour over and coffee bag.

Tastes delish. And I appreciate good coffee: I’ve a better than just good burr grinder, a decent 15 bar Saeco espresso maker, my old Chemex set, French press, etc.

DIY coffee/tea bags from Amazon are my go to, for my Yerba fix when I don't take the bombilla and a 2nd cup.
reusable with a rinse.
They make a decent pre-filter for water when I feel.the need.

Only problem for me, who never adds sugar to tea or coffee, is it means I have to carry sugar as well because Turkish coffee cooked with sugar is just the best. Don't know why.
At least sugar is lighter than an egg 😂
as for Turkish being the best.... hmmmm Think I'll stick with cowboy coffee or with an egg 😂

Turkish coffee is just a way of brewing (not dissimilar to cowboy coffee), and is infinitely variable, from the insipid to the toe-curling (Mırra Kahvesi - I think its name comes from the Arabic for bitter), depending on the beans and roast, which Jake appears to have control over. Then there are various spices that can be added as well.
It's more faff than I want when camping, so I go with heathen instant instead.

The faff is the constant, I'm wondering for the sake of it just bags for ease or have a prat with a filter set up 🤔🤔

I prefer filtered coffee, it is also a lot easier to pack out a used paper filter than a handful of grounds. I have tried making my own coffee bags, but was not impressed (although DIY tea bags work very well).

I've moved from the large size* Munieq Tetra Drip to the Soto Helix - it's a bit heavier (51g), but does not need assembly, which can take some time with old, wet and cold hands.

* large size needed for a pint mug!

I'll confess that I am taking coffee bags more often, just for convenience over a filter. I've not investigated the options in great detail, but the Percol ones are OK. I can't make the coffee as strong as I would like, though.
