    Nearly peed myself with exitement

    Over at Massdrop

    the postage is only £5

I also hope to dodge import charges as I believe if I remember and understood properly that the stuff is send from a UK Warehouse... that was another drop though and not too sure if it applies for this one...

I am considering buying another one and wonder if people are interested to organise a collective order in case there is an import fee and we could then share the cost of the import charge?

Ps. If so inclined pls do use this link if you sign up as it would give me referral credit :hilarious::joyful::asshat::p

I think these are made in China on the cheap, not sure about fill quality etc

I got stiffed for import and RM handling charges on a 3 pair pack of merino socks from Massdrop, that was my last purchase with them

Think I saw the specs were 800 fill down and 15d material so a bit different to the normal EE product.

ohhhh reallyyy?? *exitement slowly dwindling* .... that is a bit missleading then, isnt it?

Do you reckon it is still worth while to carry ahead with my order?? I would hope they produce to a high standard... im sure EE would not risk their excellent reputation and it does say ethically sourced down .... though if they are made in china I am pretty sure the Market there will soon copy and probably sell for a much better price... ?

Everything I've ever bought from Massdrop has had the true price declared on the customs declaration form and shipped from the US

Thank you.... will look into it again and consider if its worth while to carry thru.... HOWEVER despite specs a -6 quilt for 600g and ethical down STILL sounds appealing at £165.... :hungry::hungry: ?? decisions decisions... I mean I do have a -16 EE quilt headed my way and a Criteriom Quanum (0 degree at around 550g) I was considering selling that one...

which would ba a better choice? Criterion or Chinese EE :eeker::eeker:

Tim will stand behind his product even the stuff sewn in China as part of the Massdrop collaboration project.
I wouldn’t hesitate. Since over 1300 have requested these I think demand is there.

Ignoring import etc how much of a saving is it over one of the 20 degree direct from EE?

Quality wise I think the shells of the 'on the shelf' Revelations on the EE website are made in China so the quality must be there, sure they'd soon spot a load of duffers when they're stuffing them at EE :)

Prices from the US typically have no added sales tax. That when they arrive abroad VAT is added doesn't upset me too much (though I do like it when they get through "free"). That in the UK, and in Turkey, we have to pay VAT on most things we buy DOES bother me.

My experience too..............& everything I've had from Massdrop has been clobbered with 20% VAT + £8 handling charge :(

I just checked... over at EE its only around 35£ more... so not a HUUUGEEE difference... although postage with them directly is usually much higher than the £5 on the drop (think £20 or 30)... however @Whiteburn just said that massdrop charge an 8£ handling fee... which is HUGELY missleading as it is not mentioned anywhere.. @Whiteburn when did you last buy from Massdrop? maybe its an old thing?

Just had a look, assuming 20% VAT + £8 handling fee (Royal Mail?) that would make the MD version around £212 delivered vs an off the shelf equivalent/made to order (850fp/10d vs 800/15 of the MD) of about £293, I think?

Still seems a pretty good saving.

Just realised the 8£ handling fee is Royal mail and not massdrop... sorry @Whiteburn for missunderstanding you.

I'll chime in with a different experience with regards to customs on Massdrop shipments to Europe. I received my last item tax free from the US (tracking was pretty clear) but they used Deutsche Post as a carrier. Now, interestingly the return address did not mention Massdrop in the US but a Deutsche Post warehouse somewhere in Germany. The package had the necessary customs slip in a clear self-adhesive envelope and a small yellow sticker in German only stating that the item did not comply with articles so and so of EU regulation, i.e. a very discreet way of saying it came from outside the EU.

Now, this didn't have a 165 quid price tag (more like 40) and it may be that French customs simply decided that the value wasn't worth taxing but Deutsche Post certainly did its best not to attract undue attention.

HVe you checked out the Monday fire sales on EE? Got my 20dgree quilt half price. It was a return as the original customer said it smelled of down!! Smelled fine to me, just like a normal quilt or bag :)

One other thing to consider is that the Massdrop shipping date is the 22/12.

Having read part of the comments on the Massdrop site, all orders will ship from the US, so you should assume it will cost around £212 in the end (barring a pleasant surprise), and Massdrop actually plan to run this drop on a regular basis (at least every two months) if this is successful.

My Komperdells I bought on MD shipped from Germany too, no import duty to pay on those

depending on the size of the prize, you can also use a forwarding agent who will for a small fee take your parcel and send it on 'as a gift' Used to do this a few years ago when the dollar:£ ratio was 2:1 You avoid paying VAT then. Obviously the Deutsche Post option is even cheaper :)
  22. JKM

All but one of my purchases have

Now this could actually be a good thing!
The one MD parcel I have had that slipped through customs landed in the UK on boxing day

I thought this was only the case for things produced outside the US. This quilt may be one of them.

I would guess this will be shipped directly firm China and duties will be down to how 'kind' the MD agent is, but I would guess 90% chance of both vat AND duty being incurred but wish you all the luck in finding a customs officer of benevolent spirit.

Tempting, but must be made under license
    • Green shell and charcoal liner
    • Weight per included strap: 0.4 oz (11.3 g)
    • Made in China
Found this info on mass drop page.

We have had a few drops for EE quilts before, and they made our own Massdrop quilt. However, capacity was always a limiting factor, which meant our members kept waiting and waiting for the next drop. And so we have spent the better part of this year searching for the highest quality manufacturing partner that could produce up to our collectively high expectations. These quilts are manufactured in the same factory that makes the top-end sleeping bags for the best Japanese and American outdoor brands, the same stuff that you'll find in REI. These are made according to the exact same specifications as all US-made EE quilts.

I'm half hesitating on this one. I love everything about my Cumulus 350 quilt except for the fact that it is a little too narrow in the buttocks region. I really like the cut of my GramXpert quilt which is similar to EE's and not as fussy to use.

But I can't help thinking that for roughly the same price as the Massdrop quilt shipped and taxed (or a little more if I have it overstuffed to 400 gr), I can have Cumulus make a bespoke wider quilt. And that will have the equivalent of 900 US cuin goose down rather than 800 duck down. And a 10 year warranty...
