Well, for what it’s worth, when they’re back in stock - perhaps ULOG? They are worth having.

I’ve given mine a whizz tonight and was actually very surprised... I mean, a pegs a peg innit...

They slide in well and hold like bu99ery. :)

I just ordered some of the 6" from ulog. Would have preferred the long ones. Wanted to bring something sturdier than my sorex for family camping.

I think (from my perspective) the shorter ones would be fine, if not preferable :)

Unless you camp on a peat bog. (No unkind references to Dartmoor please)

Good to hear, I'll use Easton 9" on the four main points and these 6 inch for the mid panal. Have 5 Ali solid carbon fiber stakes for the guys.
They are replacing some Chinese 6" y stakes in the mid panel, I'll see if they're an improvement.

I'm curious in how many people have had peg failures (breaking or pulling free) when camping.

I can recall a handful of instances in say, 1,500 + nights.

Of the Easton/nail type stakes?
Or in general?

I’ve personally had no failures in a lot fewer nights of camping
Had some bad groundhog copies bend very easily. No failure, but made me nervous / a pain to get into the ground.
Had stakes that were too short slip out in certain soils (just put some rocks on it innit).

In the worst wind I’ve camped (not slept) through, had TI skewers hold fine with rocks piled on.

I don’t imagine stakes themselves fail very often. Aside from super light stakes that crack (carbon tubes?) or stakes with heads (Eastons) it seems unlikely any stake would break. The rest of it (holding power, ease of getting into various soils, tendency to bend, being too short/too long) are all trade off weaknesses can be dealt with in most circumstance

No failures since I took camping seriously.
I've been shot down for saying it on here before.... But in my experience the best way short of over the top rock pounding to break them is using your feet. The pressure applied goes in a curve not straight down so puts a bending force on them. For me if it doesn't go in with hand pressure I try another spot and if it's too rocky I get a ti nail and rock to pilot hole first.

Not broken any but bent a few. Had pegs pull out but that is down to me doing some (very) poor site selection.

I’ve had dead-men work loose during polar lows... but that’s been extreme.

Otherwise I’ve never known it. The reality is you want something that’s light, doesn’t bend when you’re whamming it in and doesn’t pull out.

I did some 45 degree pulls with 1.5m of line on various pegs years ago and found the Vargo Ti V pegs to be the worst - they shot out the ground like Polaris missiles (consistently). They are light and very strong but the coefficient of frictional is low.

All in all... a peg’s a peg :)

I would say there are better or worse pegs for different conditions. My local chalk and flint hills, baked in the summer make eastons etc very difficult to use. Perfik for ti shepherds hooks and nails. Which are carp in Dartmoor or Welsh bog.... Where the tube stakes are great, then there are sandy beaches....

No, it was me...when I cared about such twaddle :asshat: Over 10 years ago now .

There was another peg that folded and bent during the test - i can’t remember which one it wasn’t now... I adopted the temporary identity of ‘The Bent Peg’ shortly afterwards :D

Absolutely right.

The test:

1. Does it go in.

2. Does it hold without slipping out.

3. Does it pull out unscathed when finished with.

:rolleyeses: A lifelong mantra.
