Interchangeable I think, most use the 'body bag' method but there are also waterproof suits worn underneath clothing which you can then use your spare clothing for warmth as well as drying them out as you sleep

Had second thoughts about the vapor barrier thing.
I think VB didn't refer to the VBL clothing system, instead I think they were using it to describe any layer in hammock insulation the blocked moisture transfer, like a CCF pad, Reflectix, space blanket, etc.
