Alan Kimber, guide who lives in Fort Bill shared this on FB ..terrible news

Geoff Monk and MWIS are being taken offline from 31 Dec 2016 as far as I can see and the decision by Sport Scotland, MCoS and the Scottish Government has already been made, behind closed doors. Cost saving could be at the heart of this, so I hope that whoever takes over mountain forecasts in the UK can also help save lives in the way that Geoff Monk and MWIS has over many years. Anyone who has listened to Geoff Monk will know how knowledgeable, enthusiastic and committed he is to forging links with mountaineers. Personally I don't think he can be replaced and If you feel able to pass on this bad news within the mountain community, it may help to show how much Geoff Monk is held in high regard. Have any of you been asked for an opinion on which mountain forecast is best for mountaineers? Have any of you been asked if MWIS is fit for purpose? Try lobbying your local MSP and MCoS. Please also share this post to as many folk as you can, especially the Met Office. They will struggle to follow Geoff monk.

    Just seen this.

Whilst it's very bad news, can't help thinking something better could come out of it. The Meto mountain forecast is lacking and this may be the shove for them to improve their service.

Ditto. My go to mountain forecast. I often find it a little on the pessimistic side but always refer to it prior to a trip.

    Sad news :(

That's a disaster and very sad, I have never needed to look any further than MWIS for my forecasts and love it's simple concise style.
    It will be sorely missed.

wonder what the budget is? Crowd funding may be the way to go

I don't see a good reason why the Meto mountain service and MWIS are split. The Meto already supply MWIS with data and (apparently) funding. Surely, it makes sense to merge the two together in some form.

I suspect it's the "P" word; Sport Scotland providing funding for a service to England and Wales too.

    Lets put this in context.
Lottery funding in the Millions for a few competitors to the Olympics versus a few thousands for many ordinary folks to get out and enjoy time in our uplands safely - and improve their physical and mental well being.
Priorities in this island are way out of kilter..

@Teepee, and why shouldn't an English sporting body help fund too ?? - as many (if not more) of the folks on the hills are from south of the Border
..……….because it's a minority leisure choice of those in the 'power corridors' in England where such decisions are considered. Many organisations should be involved in funding - eg. the National Trust who seem to own (and organise:rolleyes:) a large chunk of the uplands.

I've not used it for years myself; habits I guess. Met office + others mainly.

An accurate forecast is absolutely lovely (this from Mr Fair Weather)....but many have managed in the hills for years without same.

Always hard to judge opine from social media responses...I guess we will have to await developments.

I think they should; National funding for a National sevice. I've no idea how the funding is split, that will likely 'come out in the wash' before long.

Largely agree over the rest of the points but probably best left until another time, with a dram, in the hills.
