MYOG Fastpack style backpack

I never really intended to make this pack, I sat down and started tinkering with the hip-belt design for another pack I'm making. Somehow I got a little distracted and decided to prototype some shoulder straps for a running vest/'fastpack' style pack.

Despite not being able to find the binding foot attachment I soldiered on and out popped a set of shoulder straps. Originally only intending to make the straps as a prototype set I used some pretty heavyweight mesh for the pockets as I didn't want to use up loads of my decent stuff. The binding is a mess but hey-ho, they're only test straps right?

IMG_5546.JPG

After pinning the straps to another pack and test fitting they seemed to fit my shoulders really well, so well infact I went rummaging for some fabric that I haven't got an intended use for... I found a metre or so of 420D Nyon (I think) that I bought from Ali many moons ago so got to work cutting it all out, thinking I may as well just make a full test pack :whistling:

After cutting all the panels/pockets etc it was time to put it all together, I tend to find once the shoulder straps are done then the rest of a pack comes together quite quickly so it didn't seem to take to long. I kind of freestyled the dimensions going off previous builds. It's around 26wx14dx75h. Rather than making it a simple rectangular cuboid it's got a few curves in there, the front panel is narrower than the back panel, the sides narrow as you go up whereas the front panel widens etc etc.

There's stuff I'd change if I make another but for something that I just made up as I went along and never really intended to make in the first place, I'm pretty happy with how it's turned out. It seems to fit really well and a cursory lap around the block loaded with 5.5kg suggests it might even be ok for running :)

Looks great! Which 3D mesh is that? Looks like the holes go all the way through? Double roll on pocket mesh instead of binding? Do you find it any better? I bound AND folded my last one as i put the loop for the top strap on the mesh. Hook buckle from adventurexpert... I'm liking them a lot!

Damn fine , I'm yet huckleberry for testing and feedback ;) o bought my fastpacks before I could tun/fastpack...now I've just bought two more fast vests lol ...as I can finally run/ fast bimble...fastpack style packs are the future of litepacks imho the vests designs work well with sub 6kg loads and even more if the fit is right...I've now 3 ultimate direction packs and just got a new polish innov8 0-15 ultra vest...mileage will be the proof of the pudding

@theoctagon nice one Matt!
@craige I like the G buckles as well for speedy closure but had ocasion when I wasnt able to unhook fast due to tinny point at the end of the buckle curve that holds the webbing in place. Was thinkig to sand some of the point of to increase sliding move of the buckle

I have a pretty big loop and when cinched is pulling the front mesh tight so I loosen it before unhooking. No issues and just hook and pull when packing up.

@theoctagon Great pack! The straps look great. I also like your bottom attachment method for the straps to the pack. seems lightweight. Is it practical?

Also what bottom mesh are you using? Is that the Black Shiny Spandura from SeattleFabrics? How is it working out? I'm looking for some mesh for bottom pockets...Only have the duraweave from Quest and it's not stretchy enough for my liking...

The attachment seems to work fine, a mkII would use narrower webbing for the straps but it seems to work well.

The bottom mesh is something I bought ages ago, from Rockywoods I think. Last time I looked they no longer offered it. I think extrem offer something similar now but I haven’t ordered any from them as yet as I’ve plenty left for now :)

Cheers Craig,

The mesh just came from ebay, had it sat around for a while but yeah the holes go all the way through, seemed perfect for this application to allow the straps to breath. It’s got larger ‘holes’ on one side, I’ll see if I can find a link for it.

Same re the pockets, bound and double rolled. Yeah I’m liking the hook buckles thingies as well :)

Ah nice! Yeah can't decide which material to get for my bottom pockets hehe. Which material are you talking about from extrem? I've looked before and again after you mentioned it but couldn't find something that fits the bill. Am I missing something?
