R-Value 0.44, lowest temp?

My SynMat UL Lite M Regular arrived today, ULOG have it down as a R-Value of 0.44, which they give as -2c

My Previous mat the UL7 is down as 0.55 R-Value and i've not had a cold night on it yet

My quilt (Katabatic Gear Flex 900fp) is rated to 30f or 1.1c
As i don't do winters, this has been enough so far

I'm wondering what sort of temps you think a pad with a R-Value of 0.44 will be comfortable down to?

Cheers
Mark

Mat R ratings are a black art. I swear ccf mats perform at double their R ratings compared to inflatables. That said, an inflatable.of .44 (SI, presumably, = 4.4 US) would do be to below freezing.

As always, it depends on the sleeper. I'd say the rating is about right for the average user on that mat before it balloons and tips them off.

Its so personal rating business - Nowadays, I test all my cold sleeping gear on the roof terrace with a good quality thermometer and a warm house to escape to if too ambitious....

It's 2.5 (US) according to that page so less than an xlite. -2 sounds like a reasonable "limit" but not something I would want to do a lot.

Thanks everyone

Lowest i'll see is maybe 3c, so it looks like it'll do the job then

Not as thick as my UL7, but from the quick test it seems comfortable enough.
Fair bit lighter as well at 385g (compared to my UL7 at 467g)

I mixed up converting R (SI) to R (Imperial) with converting R(SI) to TOG, so scratch what I wrote above. Probably still good to 3C though. Add one of the cheap ebay silvered mats that Teepee has linked to in the past if you're worried.

I've been comfy at 0 celsius on an uninsulated STS with one of those silvered polysheets underneath...
EDIT - these silvered polysheets are very tough and good protection for mattress too...

It has alot to do with ground type and condition aswell. How well it conducts heat...
For example, Thermarest Prolite (US rating of 2.2) was quite cold when the temps fell under 0.
Since Neoair Xtherm I have not had any issues with mattress anymore :)

I use one of those silver sheets under my airmat down to about 3c, then I start packing 2 of them. 3 get taken when it's sub zero, down to -6c or so. I've slept on 3 of them alone in relative comfort. Not bad for 70g each.

It's very rare they don't make the cut as they are so very useful. Sleeping, hayboxing/pot cozy, sit mat, backpack pad, mat protector, underquilt VBL....I also like to put my footwear on them in the sun as it dries them faster.
They've been with me for well over a thousands nights out, really quite fond of them TBH. Some have quite a lot of duck tape stuck to them..when they approach more duck than mat, they get retired.

Since I first came across them in a post by you they've been on nearly every trip. They pack up smaller and have more durability than expected.

This seems to be the link i've seen banded about in other threads. Placed an order myself.

They're the ones. Basically , TV packaging foam with an emergency blanket laminated to one side.

They come in different sizes too. I most often use the 150cm x 70cm. It's good to keep the edging strip on as they last a lot longer, and that sewn strip is lighter than sticky tape.

Lidl do a a truck windscreen reflector that cuts down to size, and the smaller car windscreen reflectors suit a narrower sleep mat...you can still find them for 99p in some places.

I thnk @el manana found some in roll form for laminate floor underlay.

I cant rate this stuff highly enough - a piece wider and longer than my Neoair weighs 60g, its just as comfortable as the Klymit airframe as a Prophet backpad when folded. Not too bulky, great insulating barrier. This is quite hard wearing, some underlays can be cheaper quality.

Your local laminate floor shop should have some for a few quid.
