No, removable 20mm webbing belt, something beefier

    4) Side pockets

    Solid fabric

    5) Rear pocket

    Mesh

    6) Pockets other

    No

    7) Top closure

    Simple drawcord

Ok, this is interesting. Everyone of course have their own preferences. But for a frameless pack for week long trips i would go something like this:

    1) Capacity (Body only)

30L, I prefer a flat wide body over a longer.

    2) Fabric (Body)

    Hybrid cuben. Dyneema bottom.

    3) Hip belt

    Removable 20mm webbing belt

    4) Side pockets

    Solid fabric, dyneema

    5) Rear pocket

solid/mesh hybrid. Same here, dyneema fabric and strong mesh in the bottom for drainage. Possible small mesh stretch pockets on the shoulder straps, perfect for snacks, sunglasses etc.

    6) Pockets other

Zipped inner pocket for keys, passport, cards etc

    7) Top closure

Make the top in nylon with simple drawcord. In my experience cuben and X-pac starts to wear first at these spots. Compression from a top strap going from the back of the pack attaching to the top of the front pocket.

    8) Shoulder straps

5mm padding + 4mm spacer mesh. Dyneema fabric for the outside of the straps. Sternum strap with whistle.

    9) Other stuff (Yes or no)

Side compression capable with two straps on each side. Trekking pole/Ice axe loops

    I like this game. :D

    1) Capacity (Body only)

    30L

    2) Fabric (Body)

    X-Pac VX07

    3) Hip belt

    removable 20mm webbing belt

    4) Side pockets

    mesh

    5) Rear pocket

    solid/mesh hybrid

    6) Pockets other

Pa'lante style bottom pocket (stretch mesh), internal (removable?) key/coin pocket

    7) Top closure

    Quickstep/MLD newt style

    8) Shoulder straps

5mm padding + 4mm spacer mesh, removable sternum strap with whistle, full length daisy chain.

    9) Other stuff (Yes or no)

Side compression capable (y), ice axe/walking stick carrying loops (y), some sort of load lifter (y- cord/ll3), internal pad pocket (y - am tossing up whether I prefer an inner pocket or external holders)

Thanks for all the replies, so far it's looking like VX07

@edh I don't think Zpacks sell the orange hybrid anymore

I'll set up one of those snazzy poll things to vote for which colour VX07, think extrem have black, blue, grey, white, or red...

What was wrong with the black one you @theoctagon ?

That looked neat, did it have a pocketed hipbelt?
  9. theoctagon

    theoctagon Thru Hiker

    Which one? :angelic:

Haven't made one with a pocketed hipbelt... yet. Last pack I made has tabs for a removable belt but at the moment I'm just testing the attachment etc with a simplified version of the belt, before I make one with pockets.

this looks fine to me plus hipbelt with pockets, maybe rolltop closure to have snaplocks to fold it down the sides.

    A bit late, but:

    1) Capacity (Body only)

    30L

    2) Fabric (Body)

    X-Pac VX07

    3) Hip belt

Fixed, lightly padded with two silnylon pockets (I was in the removable camp, but have changed my mind)

    4) Side pockets

    mesh

    5) Rear pocket

    mesh

    6) Pockets other

Pa'lante style bottom pocket? Not sure, I've not used one so don't know how useful it'd be.

    7) Top closure

    Drawstring with simple pocketed lid.

    8) Shoulder straps

5mm padding + 4mm spacer mesh, removable sternum strap

    9) Other stuff (Yes or no)

Side compression capable, ice axe/walking stick carrying loops, some sort of load lifter, internal pad pocket (maybe).

Looking through the replies i think we're going to end up with something along the lines of a 40L pack, main pocket mesh, solid side pockets, 20mm removable hip belt, side compression and able to carry poles/ice axe, sound reasonable?

I started it way back when but then my machine died so it’s just been sat unfinished in the gear cupboard.

I’m out of webbing now so it’ll remain unfinished until more arrives...

For me it would have been all the things the ZPacks Arc Haul is (built with the optional top mesh pockets), slightly tougher mesh but on an Osprey Exos frame and suspension

I would like a Granite Gear VT but with thicker fabric so its easier to pack. (I can't afford/justify a new version).
My hat off to those who myog  (I started a bottle holder a year ago...)

    What he said. Except for
    • Two side pockets, deep enough to take a 1L bottle - Platypus rules
    • No too bothered about a hip belt unless it's 50L- Must have a hip belt
