Hello from Devon

Hi there

I've been lurking on the forums for a little while so (nudged by Paul at Treadlite, who mentioned Shewie's inflator doodah) I thought I'd join.

I'm just getting into this backpacking lark, so I'm finding loads of useful content here and enjoying the friendliness of the community - thanks to you all for sharing your knowledge and experience. Can't find the instructions for making the inflator doodah, though, just tantalising references to it :)

I'm hoping to get some shorter walks and camping in during 2019 with a view to maybe tackling the South West Coast Path in 2020 or beyond... Brave words!

Welcome to the forum Helen :)

It’s tricky linking from my phone but try searching for “doodar” and you should find the thread in the DIY section

Thanks, Shewie - that was quick - got it! I can see hours of fun ahead this winter...

And thanks, Diddi :)

Not sure quite what sort of doo dah you're referring to - a kind of adaptor for using a placky bag to inflate mat - a good plan??

I'm everso grand so have a schnozzle bag equivalent for when weather is nice.

But have found the little grey battery powered thingy ( a slightly different category of doo dah ) that looks like a teensy flip top bin, is better for inflating on rainy camps - there's just not always room to do inflator bag in small tent, and keep mat dry, on those rare occasions when it rains on our western seaboard.

I would post a link but in a bit of a rush - some one here will know @El for instance .

Hello also from South West too

If it’s raining I leave the mat inside the shelter whilst I inflate, some mats are easier to do this than others though.

Shewie - yes please to tubing, have started a conversation, thank you!

Fair Weather Camper - The placky bag one - that's it. But I look forward to enlightenment about the flip top bin option as well. And does it rain in the South West? ;-)

This one (may be available cheaper elsewhere?)

I've never had an inflator bag that I've found easy to use inside a tent (often too much spiky stuff outside for us). Apart from the mini pump, the only other suitable tool that I've found is the Zajo hand pump (often available half price on Sportpursuit). It works best with Klymit style valves, less well with Neo Airs and I'd imagine not at all with Expeds.
Neither option doubles up as a stuff sack but the Zajo can for part of a pillow.

I have one of the mini pump inflators but save weight by using els

A standard NeoAir XLite takes me between 20 and 25 exhalations. If I couldn't manage that, I'd have worries about whether I should be out there on my own.

There is also the 'mould' issue (caused by moisture in the breath lodging within the mat and feeding/breeding whatever fungus it is), which I've read about but haven't yet identified in mine during 6 years of use. Doesn't mean I'm not sleeping on top of some kind of horrible invisible bug farm though.

Welcome onsite Helen BTW!

Hi Helen and welcome to the forum. :)

Inflators are boring... the headrush of hyperventilation of an evening is underrated.

Mmmn yes well, I can't say I've not ever, had to resort to lung power, pon discovering my widget has run out of juice.

But the mould issue is real ime.

There was a rather disgusting calculation done by Mr Mole as to weight of moisture laden mould contained therein... Comparing two otherwise identical mats, but one after several years of oral inflation..

It was a significant number....By tl standards anyhows... :geek::geek:
