Decathlon recommendations

What's the skinny on base layer sizes? Looking at some new merino for the winter, are the sizes just as off with those? I'm normally a medium in base layers so do I need a large?

K:)
In all the various Decathlon brands I have bought (Quechua/Forclaz/Domyos) I have always gone up a size from my usual medium to a large. Returns to Decathlon are straightforward should you have any problems.

Trousers don't come in long leg lengths, which is a real shame.

My kids are quite a bit of decathlon stuff, good quality good value kit. Their cycling kit and bikes are pretty good too. Personally I have a few Simond things which are excellent value, and a couple of packable rucksacks and useful bits and bobs. It's a great store, I went to one in France in the summer and it was huge but very similar to the Surrey Quays one in London. I'm in London so have quite a few Decathlon options locally

I bought a QUECHUA Men’s waterproof jacket FH500 for £55
https://www.decathlon.co.uk/mens-fh500-helium-rain-jacket-id_8492424.html

Used it on last 50 miles of WHW walk I did recently. I had one period of about two hours with heavy rain and wind. The zip didn't keep the water out. The material wetted out and felt cold and clammy inside. I don't think I would therefore recommend it. having said that I've yet to find a decent waterproof jacket having spent anything between £25 for a Regatta one up to about £220 for a Berghause Mera Peak Goretex one.

Got it last year or maybe even two years ago and I live in Belgium so not sure about UK availability... Have seen it linked recently in this post from another thread though:

Thanks for that I'll have a look at them next time I'm in Sheffield. It's a shame they don't give the weight.

Where are you in Belgium? I go on motorcycle trips that often start with a run out to Bastogne on the way further east and end with an overnight in Leuven, Bruges or Ypres (apologies for spelling). This year we had our last night in Mons and saw the Fire of Saint John's parades, which were completely unexpected. We only went there because Ypres was fully booked.

The XL is 251g on my scales.
Somewere in the middle between Antwerp and Ghent in a small town called Tielrode. Cosy little place but not too much hiking grounds nearby...

I just got some of their £1.49 fleece gloves. Just perfic for what I want. Very good warmth to weight.

I picked some of those up as well to replace the ones I thought I'd put in my Rab Vital Windshell inside pockets. Then I found that they aren't pockets that are closed at the bottom in the Rab Vital Windshell jacket. Unfortunately I've littered the Yorkshire Dales with gloves.

two decathlon thingamabobs I am v impressed with atm

https://www.decathlon.co.uk/ultralight-toiletry-bag-id_8492580.html 38g with label etc removed. I won't likely use this for UL or mountaineering packing stuff as I have a honed system in place for all my bits and bobs using some of Paul's zip up wallet jobbies. However, starting out this is a great jump off packing solution for organizing bits. I got one and then bought 4 more as I pack my training bags for the week with everything I need and then only pack shoes on the day.

https://www.decathlon.co.uk/mh500-shorts-blue-id_8493713.html a tenner and super flexible. I'll buy more colours as the price drops as I use these for weightlifting I'd happily go walking in them too.

I think Capn Paranoia of this parish is also a bit of a fan too.

I am indeed. Given the decline in the quality of stuff in TK Maxx, I have moved from being 'man at TKM' to 'man at Decathlon'. It also coincided with a branch opening near me...

It's worth bearing in mind that Decathlon have a 'vertically integrated product range'. So the quality (and price) varies. But none of it is rubbish. The top end stuff rivals the fabrics and design of the big boys with ease, and beats them hands down on price.

The only problem I have is that they do have a habit of fiddling with designs that are perfect, and making them poorer... Oh, and constantly changing the names of the same product...

The stand out pieces for me are:
winter soft shell trousers (originally Forclaz 900 Warm, then 500 Warm, then...)
Simond Mountaineering trousers
(actually, all the 'higher end' trousers)
lightweight down jackets (the £40, 900fp ones, although they messed up the hood design a couple of years back, and now completely revised)
Techwinter 500 shirt (a waffle inner face thick base/light mid fleece)
Simond Alpinism shirt (similar to the Techwinter, but more fitted, and a bit warmer)
Synthetic liner gloves

I'm also very happy with the Simond Alpinism boots, which have given me no trouble at all, even after very minimal breaking in. Some of their more casual shoes are a very narrow fit.
And I have a favourite soft shell jacket, sadly discontinued, the Forclaz 900 'Soft Spread', which has a hexagonal inner flocking, working like a VR. The flocking is lasting better than expected.

The Mountaineering trousers are pretty legendary on UKC; no 'what winter trousers?' thread passes without multiple references to them, with many people preferring them to more expensive, branded trousers they own.

On the other hand, the tailoring of some of their products is bonkers; great fabrics, but ruined by stupid pattern cutting. I've provided feedback, and product improvement suggestions on a number of occasions... They could do a R1 hoodie/ME Eclipse/Montane thingy killer if only they tried just a bit harder. They almost managed it a couple of years ago with the Forclaz 900 hoody, only the made an unnecessary pig's ear of the hood, adding a low collar inside the hood, and making the hood a poor fit, and floppy. Great fabric, great price, terrible hood. Sigh.

Oh yes; go up one size from 'normal'. I'm a perfect 'M' in Decathlon. Which is nice.

Have seen it linked recently in this post from another thread though:

Ah, yes, that's what used to be the Techwinter 500. I have a few of them...

If the seam on the collar bone was flat-locked, it would be perfect. Near Arc'teryx quality at Decathlon prices.

I'm tempted by the mountaineering trousers, but have to get over my gram weenie proclivities first!

They're not lightweight (but they are comparable to similar offerings). Mine are 800g. I wear them for skiing, preferring the '900 Warm' softshell trousers for winter walking.

I wish I had got 2 forclaz 100 walking poles. 120cm ball-bearing locks about 190grams. £4.99 each, would be good for the faux-star. Ultralight ultra cheap with a bit of polycro.
