Cumulus Quilt 350

Comparing between the Quilt 350 and Comforter 350, I'm not sure what would be the benefit to getting the quilt (other than eliminating drafts in the foot box), especially since it sounds like the quilt and comforter now have the same continuous baffle construction. Does this mean that the new quilt will also pose the problem for side sleepers of down falling to the sides?
And about the temperature rating: the majority of the nights that I use the quilt will be 11-14 degrees, but in some places, it may reach 4 or 5.Will the Quilt/Comforter 350 be overkill? I also purchased a silk liner to use for when it gets really hot/cold.

The quilt is more versatile since as you said it's possible to create a footbox. The comforter weighs a little less but you wouldn't ever notice that in the pack. For those temps and with the possibility of using a silk liner I would get the 150 but I'm a warm sleeper so YMMV.

The 150 works well for me this time of year, especially if i pack a ghost whisperer as a just in case layer.

Does anyone have both the old and new designs of the Cumulus quilts? I've a significant birthday on the horizon so thought I'd treat myself, well, why not?

With the older design (I've a 150 for summer use) the quoted width was right at the neck where there were a couple of small beaks of material that suddenly widened out so a stated width of 140cm was actually about 120cm if you measured it one baffle further down. The edges of the quilt are curved because of these beaks which can be seen in the photo below:

From photos on Cumulus' site it looks like the new design is more trapezoidal with straight edges, it seems that it's very similar to the Enlightened Equipment Revelate:

With the old design I'm just on the limit of the girth, I'm a side sleeper and do move around a bit in my sleep, so if the new model is the same width then I'd possibly need to go custom and get an extra 10cm added. Looking at the Enlightened Equipment site I'm just under the border between their regular (137cm) and wide (147cm) widths which suggests the new design is probably OK.

i have a old style 350 and new style 200 (150) and both work great as im also i side wriggler. i do prefer the closed footbox on the old for cold camps.

I contacted Cumulus. Their response was:

As you know the older design quilts had holes in backs. The narrowest place there should have around 125cm.

Right now, they are 140cm all the way up to your hips.

I do not really think that it is needed to be widened.

Looking at another shot of the newer design it seems that the taper only begins at the top of the zip. With another 7cm or so at either side I think I should be fine with the standard width, a further 5cm would just drape on the ground.

Do you have a sleeping bag with similar dimensions, if so zip down to the height of the advertised diemension and try it out for size before you commit.

Unfortunately none of our sleeping bags have zips.

Given that the older design is narrower and just on the limit of being OK I think the new design will be fine,

I had the same problem with the old quilts (just a tad too narrow around the hips). I ended up with a 140 wide Katabatic because Cumulus was tardy bringing out their new quilts and it is fine.

Hydrophobic down is an option if you contact them 1Euro per 10g of Down so for the standard 350 it would be an additional 35Euro. They also offer a few fabric and colour choices now if you contact them. @Mike Bright found this out and I will be contacting them shortly about a new 350

Before I contact Cumulus myself, does anyone know what fabric choices and colours are available?

@Mike Bright ?

Recieved a 450 off them a couple of months back, this is the colours they offered me at the time, olive, black & graphite as standard, for 20 EUR extra they offered chestnut, burgundy, blue and navy blue.

The outer and inner fabric is Pertex Quantum 29g, I was happy with that and never asked about other options.

I added 10cm to the width and an extra baffle in length, think I added about 70 EUR to the standard price with my specifications and choice of colour.

Used it for 5 nights last week, very happy with it so far, impressed with the foot box, the baffle system there pretty much seals the hole.

Just ordered a Cumulus 350 Quilt with a extra 15cm of length added

Going to be a 4-5 weeks wait, so
I hope that’s goes quickly

Is it worth asking to amend to hydrophobic Down or will standard suffice, will only be single nights or possible occasional 2 nighters

Mine does not have factory hydrophobic down but I washed in NikWax Down Proof which does a dam good job. Given the choice again, I would order with hydrophobic down if the option was there.

I have the older style Cumulus Quilt 350 and I've never had issues with dampness. With a quilt you can 'vent' your sleep system and there is less chance of you overloading the it with perspiration.

Some years ago I used a RAB Quantum 200 mummy bag (zipless) in combination with a RAB 200 Top-Bag (no down on the lower half). This provided roughhly the same amount of down insulation as a quilt 350. The night was chilly but not as cold as I expected and I ended up with both bags quite wet in the morning. Never had an issue with a quilt.

just used it for 16 nights on the CWT, im still confused as to why i hadn't gone down the quilt route before, its been an absolute revelation to my sleeping in the cuds. using the quilt has also cured me of slipping off the sleeping pad which i used to do 3 or 4 times a night in a doss bag.

if anything the 450 was to warm for me, i started off wearing icebreaker longjohns, socks and a LS top, by night two it was pants only, although on one or two nights i think the down migrated to the sides and i felt the difference in temp, in a sleep befuddled state i kinda gave it a wee shake (aye the quilt) and the down went back to the correct areas. The foot box was fantastic, i inadvertently left it slightly open one night and had chilly feet until i figured out the oversight, absolutely no cold gets in when its properly cinched, the baffles and ties work perfectly to completely close the hole

i think im going to order a 350 as well and let Mrs C have the 450, i could also probably get away without adding the extra baffle in length, i would keep the extra 10cm width as that seemed perfect when rolling over/stretching etc.

I've used my 350 down to about -1˚C, I felt it was just on the edge at this point. I wasn't cold, neither was I toasty warm. For colder nights I have a Cumulus Magic 125 down liner bag that I can slip inside
