Hex Peak 4

Thru Hiker
I just tied a loop in the apex tape (having ditched the provided buckle part), and looped a cord into which I'd looped a few more loops to that (loopy I know). This gives me a choice of heights so that I can accommodate different pitch heights - just put the Hex's suspension hook through whichever loop suits.
I'm not much of a photographer I'm afraid; below is the arrangement on its first outing last week. The hook is being used in the green loop (the one I tied in the Asta's tape. I'd set the tent up quite low and it gave a perfect fit - if I set the pitch higher, I'd use one of the yellow loops.
Hope this helps!

 I've been trying not to buy one for a while...now that you've cleared pretty much everything up I gave up.

Scroll back a bit and see the quick pitch (in German) video I posted - it works very very well. It’ll save you getting annoyed with your new purchase.

Yes I saw that and thought it made sense - that was a nice flat pitch which helps.

Our car camping tent is a single poled tipi and the pitching method I ended up figuring out for that is the same as that video.

Just to confirm (as German is one of the many languages that I don't speak), did he pull opposite corners taut and peg them out, and then the remaining corners?

Nicht genau. Indem er die Tür an den nächsten Ring rechts hakt, hat er die Tonhöhe von vorne nach hinten auf genau 2xr begrenzt - das hat er mit der Kreidetafel erklärt.

so..........let me get this right....

he pegged out the 2 opposing corners (middle ones) then just pegged out the rest?

looks nice and taught and quick

Not exactly. By hooking the door to the next ring to the right he has restricted the front to back pitch to exactly 2xr - Thats what he was explaining with the chalk board.

The problem with just pitching ‘fore and aft’ taught is that it puts the structure out of balance.

The important bit in the video is where he hooks the door retainer to the next point over. If your a theorist then the explanation on the chalk board will reinforce how this works.

that looks tidy.

ahh i see, well... kind of.

think i would have to try it out when the rain stops, think i will understand better then when i put it into practice

Took me a while after repeated watching but the main points are
  1. Hook door to next ring ( the one on the side the door rolls upto when open )
  2. Peg out 2 opposing corners.
  3. Unclip door from the ring and pull out corners then peg.
  4. Then do for the back of tent.

Is that right Fb ?

That diagram’s crap innit

Okay

1. The distance between each primary pegging point is the same as the distance to the centre (pole).

2. By linking the hook to the next point over, it ties the door peg point to a distance equal to exactly 2 x the radius from the rear peg point ... ie the diameter of the shelter.

3. Then when you unhook it you can simply spread the sides out and peg them in.

Have a go

Just been out and tried it but I hooked the hook to the next ring on the zip side of the panel..... it should be the same but just using the opposing ring?

Seemed to work ok tho and a nice tidy pitch... just had to adjust the pegs slightly as they were slightly off (I blame my short arm span)

Yup that’s perfect.

I’ve ditched the black tape things - you won’t over-span it using that method.

ahh cheers, ye thats true, i usually leave them on to save taking loads of cord if i need to peg it out mid height but i suppose carrying extra 2mm cord would be lighter?
i forgot to take the black straps out as i have been meaning to weigh them.

have you weighed them?

i was going to sort that clip thing out to hook the inner to the apex but i am on daddy duties atm so had to ditch that for now.

have you weighed them?

:D No :D

If I was worried about the weight of a couple of straps then I’d be roughing it under a cuben tarp, sleeping on bubble wrap and gently heating couscous in a titanium spoon over a tea light candle

I took them off because they’re

A) unnecessary

And

B) a bleddy trip hazard

If you pitch the thing properly i.e. the 2 x radius method you shouldn’t need to have any sort of retaining strap or cord.
