Hex Peak 4

:D No :D

If I was worried about the weight of a couple of straps then I’d be roughing it under a cuben tarp, sleeping on bubble wrap and gently heating couscous in a titanium spoon over a tea light candle

I took them off because they’re

A) unnecessary

And

B) a bleddy trip hazard

If you pitch the thing properly i.e. the 2 x radius method you shouldn’t need to have any sort of retaining strap or cord.

Haha.... it was more of a curiosity thing to see if I could save weight lol

But ye too bloody right about the trip hazard!! Iv found that out a few times... sometimes take them out just for that reason.

Anyway... what's wrong with having your cous cous on a tea spoon:yuck::biggrin:

Sounds familiar :roflmao:

3 things i dont try to save weight on.
  1. My tent
  2. My sleeping bag
  3. Everything else in my pack.
It is what it is :D....

Test pitch in the garden....

I got a nice tight pitch first attempt using that method....works great!

The inner is another story and was a sorry flappy mess. It seems like a bit of a rubbish system really - surely a system of clips would have been better instead of faffing about pulling things tight.

I was running out of time so no doubt will figure it out on another attempt.

Great sized porch space though for sitting out of the rain, cooking etc.

I’m glad the pitching method worked well.

Re: bits of string everywhere... I think it’s pants too, but the flysheet can be pitched at variable heights so the inner had to be adjustable.

By strange coincidence last night I was thinking "how can I reduce the weight of my big 3" ie pack, tent and sleeping. I have a Hexpeak v4a fly and although its a tad small when I'm horizontal I'll still use it when I'm on my own. I might add a Borah bivy or similar for bug and wet foot box prevention but that's only adding to weight. I didn't camp for 20 years because I got cold, stiff backed and miserable sleeping in a tent. So my main focus has been on warmth and comfort and although I could save maybe 400 grams on my pad and 400 grams on my sleeping bag but I'm not going to because I want to keep the comfort. So I can't save anything on my 1100 gram Exped lightening 60 because I need a pack capable of carrying my not a light as it could be kit.

I'm going to have a go at using the pitching method show in the German video later. Looks like a cracking way to get a nice "square" taught pitch quickly. Less walking round and round in circles tweaking :)

From what I've seen @PhilHo it's not the Big 3 any more, it's the Big 4.

The new addition is Electricals, which often top the list!

Each to their own, YHYOH, plus all the other obligatory platitudes of course, but some folk seem to devote tremendous energy to shaving every possible gram from their basic kit while apparently not giving a second thought to walking around with a sub-branch of Dixons on their backs.

:D

And then there’s food... lots of fresh food seems feature these days. I like that. :)

So that’s the big 5

We had a saying in Antarctica... we even had it printed on the back of out T shirts one winter.

Yep it's the Luxe inner for now....
Yes, that one is a bit of a faff, and it shouldn't be given that it's the V4A manufacturer's dedicated inner for that tent.
It gets easier with practice and a bit of fettling - I used it for the first season.
But 600g? I mean, really? What were they thinking of, having produced a great shelter weighing barely more at 660g? It's as though the person who designed the Hexpeak then gave it to someone else (less inspired) to design the inner as an afterthought.
That's why many of we Hexpeak People use a third-party inner. This is the one I've just moved to, and at £30 for a 200g weight saving you may want to do the same:
