I envy you on two levels....
Firstly you live within dashing distance of the lakes, rather than having to tolerate the 6-8 hour drive some if us have
Secondly, a canal boat !!!! I lived in Oxford on the banks of the canal for a while and my route to work was along the towpaths. Every morning I would gaze enviously at the boats I passed.
My daydream at the time was to get out of my catering job and become a water Gypsy, floating around the UK waterways at the mercy of their tepid flows.
I thought perhaps I could grow 'beneficial herbs'
in a greenhouse at the front of the boat and ply my trade in every town I passed 
, thus becoming self sufficient.
Alas it never happened, I ran away from catering to become an accountant and my wild dreams were forgotten.

Thank you so much for the warm welcome everyone! and what a dream that was @JKM - I'm sorry to hear it didn't come to fruition but if you ever want to tour the waterways up here, you're welcome to come along for a ride Yes, I count myself very lucky and it's a shame many people don't even consider this way of life...
