So. Where do i go now to loose weight???

Evening all,

Poor weather and too much of the laughing juice last night prevent me from getting out today so instead i thought i'd sort through and weigh all my gear to see what weight it would be for a 2-3 day excursion.

I've managed to get everything i need for a total weight of 5100gms (excludes food, water, fuel and the bag itself).

I currently have 2 bag options that i already own Macpac Pro amp race 25 at 931 gms or a Lowe Alpine Airzone pro 35-45 at a whopping 1610 gms. The Macpac is a tad too small (but i think i can get creative with the packing) and the Lowe Alpine too big (although it can all be cinched down).

So, reason for my post is that i don't know whether i should spend the money on a new quilt. Currently eyeing up the Thermarest Vesper 32, to replace my ageing Rab Quantum 250 and therefor save around 300gms on the sleeping system, or spend the money on a new lighter rucksack. I've seen the Gossamer Gear Kumo 36 which ticks all the boxes and comes in at 600gms (300 lighter than the lightest pack i have). I can't really justify buying a new quilt and a new bag at present.

Decisions, decisions.........What would be your take on it?

Oh, and please don't tell me to man up and get a tarp. That aint happening!!!! ;)

I've backpacked with the Amp 25; it was pretty good.
I had the larger race amp... Very comfy pack.

@Darren I would change the bag before the quilt.... Your quilt will have more benefits than those bags....
Then I'd change the quilt at a later stage.
That's what I would do.... And I'm. Often wrong. In theory, you should spend more time with the pack on your back than under the quilt :whistling:
Folks may think I'm a hypocrite, but comfort and function should be before weight when it comes to packs.
If I'm not wanting to go ultralight, I'm happy with my weighty TB44.

I'd say off hand first get the new pack, but then how much space are you missing in the amp for what you want to do, will the smaller pack size of the quilt do it?
Or as I've just seen Baldy's post you could get the quilt & the fasthike 32? Not alot more on the quilt to justify, if it works.

Sure i got a 50% off email on macpac bags today, from rock and run i think

I've looked at the GG kumo 36, looks decent but I really like the look of the GG murmur 36 (360g and about 150/160 quid), currently using the gorilla 40, love it

Have you done a lighterpack?
That can help Id where excess weight is.
My recommendation is to work out what you'd ideally replace every item with if wanting to loose weight. Then start with the bits that are the least £ per Oz saved.

Moving from silnylon to cuben can cost many hundreds to save 2-300g, the same weight can be saved from other items for tens of pounds.

Or their 45L option will added rear stretch pocket for minimal weight penalty is another option. 530g once stripped.

I deliberately didn't mention the 45 as I've had one and although being very well featured I found the straps slipped when carrying some weight.

Ha, yes. I chose my words carefully
Tbh this lock down has been good for the weight loss (that and the weather) managed to shift 5kgs so far.

How did you manage that? I’ve gone the opposite and am piling it on.

I upped my game with the cycling and managed to do 500 miles in a 28 day period. Combined that with smaller food portions and it worked. I'll be honest in a sucker for beer and over eating the wrong stuff on the weekends but I'm really strict throughout the week. Wanna get to 76kg and I'll be happy.

Well done,
I’ve been furloughed so am having far too many cups of tea and a cake.

I needed to put weight on, but now I've hit my target 80kg putting the brake on might be s little tricky. Cutting snacks and shrinking portion sizes will hopefully do it, as well as finally getting a little exercise.

Great work.. I've 15- 20lb to lose before I can rest up and be happy again. Another 15lb and I'd be really happy to tackle some endurance event, 20lb and I'd be ideal for trail marathon distance.

As mentioned elsewhere, Blacks have the Berghaus fasthike 32 for £45 at the mo. Might be worth a punt.

Well, I've got the 32l on order at the moment. Shame it doesn't have the stretch pocket like the 45l, but I think some shockcord criss-crossed through the daisy chain loops down the back will be good enough - could put a waterproof, or a wet tarp / flysheet under that, and that's what I'd usually use the stretch pocket for. The 32l seems a very good weight for its size (600g not stripped). Quoting the "stripped" weight for the 45l seems unrealistic to me, since it involves losing the hip-belt and the back stiffening, both of which I'd want if carrying 45l. And the unstripped weight (over 800g) is not so very different to more comfortable framed packs, such as the Osprey Exos 48, which I already have and plan to go on using for longer trips.

I was seriously tempted to order one today as it seems really good value but the lack of a stretch pocket put me off (your suggestion is a really good one though) and the comments about the hip pockets (im paranoid about loosing stuff out of unzipped pockets). Other than that it seems to tick so many boxes.
Hopefully you'll post and update on your thoughts when you get it?
