Shelter News - a thread for new shelter talk

It's not all bad, I'm sure having the face of the hobby being young cool people in hawaiian shirts and tiny packs would draw more younger people in. And people like Liz Thomas I'm sure draw people from more urban backgrounds.

Reminds me of reading carrot Quinn's book, how many people in her demographic choose hiking as their pastime in the UK, I've no idea but suspect fewer that there could be.

Oh totes! Probably better than the less subtle method I suggested in response to the Lake District Park Authority's self-flagellation over the lamentable 'under-representation' of certain demographic groupings in the NP area. Send out press gangs (the old Navy sort, not the new media type) to likely capture zones, biff under-representeds over the head and helicopter them to the AONB when they can wake to a glorious sunrise in stunning surroundings and be converts for life.

There again, remember The North Face? That started life iirc as a serious hiking brand, then somehow morphed into a massive must-have fashion label for the young, but I don't get the impression it brought many more of them out onto the hills - just the high street.

With a bit of luck, some transmutation in cool factor might deem mountain hiking the next 'in' activity for millions of young people etc. With a bit more luck I'll be dead by then. Grumpy old man.

My 20 year old daughter has converted her mates into lovers of "outdoors" stuff (hillwaking and climbing).
They previously just hadn't been introduced to the joys.

Well I have my moments when I don't actively enjoy the crowds on summits...;)

I suspect the vast majority of US hikers are just as middle aged and grey as we are here, but my view is biased by too much YouTube watching of pct hikers.

Agree Liz Thomas is the way forward, I get the impression the ideas motivating the current crop of activism has more to do with hatred of one group than love of another.
Liz seems very positive and seems to have made urban hiking a thing.

And yes I've heard of flâneurs.

In the States, mountain biking and rock climbing are the outdoor activities that have grown the most among young people. Mountain biking is HUGE throughout many parts of the Inter-Mountain West. Dayhiking is very popular with Millennials and Gen Z'ers, but I'd say backpacking has waned a little with the younger crowd.

I quite like that @murpharoo - it could spread the loading better than the single apex guy I carry for the purpose like @oreocereus - is that a MYOG job or is it on the market?
My solomid has one stock, but given this picture is on a MLD tent I guess they might Not have had them at one point, or no longer have them.
Otherwise the trailstar does, and the tramplite from memory. Tipik Tentes will as a custom option - unfamiliar with other mids.

Many mids have peak guyouts for this reason. Usually just one, to stake according to wind direction
These are for overhead suspension in the MLD mids, though can be used only in one of two directions as a guy point because of the way of the stitching is may be pulled to much against it if used in other directions.

I've seen this before on Insta and they also sell something similar on AliExpress.

If the shelter already has the loop on top which the Duomid does, just carry some spare line and add two V's to that loop.

I don't personally think there is need. My Duo has seen some pretty strong wind with me and the previous owner. Pitched well, I don't think there would be a problem.

Can we get Instagram embedding working on this site? I checked and other forums using the same software have enabled it? @Shewie
