Shelter News - a thread for new shelter talk

So I was looking at things for next year for me and missus for longer walks and while I've X-mid2 the Tarptent 2p options are 5-600g lighter. I really like the SS Li, but it's just too narrow for us, as I'm a stomach sleeper and a big bloke, but otherwise it ticks all the boxes with the inner options, big vestibules and weight. I came up with the crazy idea of fitting X-mid2 inner to SS Li, as they are similar shape & size, but the poles don't seem line up. (X-mid in red)

I also emailed TT asking if they're coming up with a bigger SS Li or sorts and the answer was no. I did got a teaser about something new coming in 2021 though.

"I can (sic.) say much more other that it easily fit you and another tall person on wide pads and blows away the x-mid for usable volume."

Scarp 2 Li or something else?

I like the bently/bugatti look... But where do you put wet gear or cook in a storm?
It's got 2 porches?
Think they are the same size as those in the Scarp 1. Which are ok for cooking in and storing wet gear.
We've done crazy Lakeland wind n rain 2s up in my Scarp 1 inc. cooking with doors shut tight. You need to be good friends.
( Though I've got mates who've done several mountain marathons 2s up in a laser comp1. Which is less roomy, and only one door/porch. Spooning needed!)

If cooking inside the Scarps, you can pull back the floor .There is a loop there so that you can peg it back , or if you like more space , just undo the inner at one corner or both and roll it back. (you can compleatly remove the inner from under the fly , even after it has been set up, if you like)

Lempo, maybe still not enough for you but you can put one standard and one wide and long mat (25x77) inside it.
A comment from one SS Li owner :
"I’ve fit a wide and regular pad in there, and we slept fine. There’s absolutely no extra space though. That’s not a big deal since you have a the massive vestibules for gear."

What we did, is we used masking tape to outline the floor measurements in our kitchen to test the space. If I was a back or side sleeper, it might work, but I'm a stomach sleeper, so my knee & elbow are bent and out to the side when I sleep. This means that I'm over the sides of a wide mat. When you add to the fact that I'm 6'3+ it leaves very little space for the other person. Missus is 5'7 and is happy in small space, but doesn't like getting elbowed or kneed while sleeping. This is why we need minimum 50" / 130cm wide floor because the vestibules can't be used for sleeping.

If I sleep alone, it doesn't matter if I poke the bathtub a bit, but I still need enough space to sleep. This is why I bought Aeon Li and not Notch Li for solo use. Even though I lose out on the double wall, I'll have more space to sleep.

UL is not kind to tall stomach sleepers which is why my XL/W mat & XL/XW quilt weigh a lot more than the average. :bawling:

Didn't look inspiring for a several day trip.
Friends who have done Several Mountain marathons? OMM 's? Most folks on the omm' s are carrying minimal gear, minimal time in shelter and may be spoon buddies before the start ;)
The pulling the floor up to cook etc sounds the plan, not unlike dropping an inner from the roof and rolling back with kit in when needed which I've done with some shelters.
I'm looking at it as a shelter for two that looks more aimed at thru hiking but not as practical as a static shelter where you may be gone running, climbing, swimming, biking etc and return to it.

Chiseller,
No the Scarps are not ideal for basecamping, but then again most hiking tents are not either.
The Stratospire 2 would be much better. Similar room inside the inner but much bigger vestibules.

Surprised that the Scarp porches are so small. It wasn't originally a reason I got an X-Mid, but the large porch(es) have become one of the reason I like the tent so much. The depth and steep walls giving height makes cooking in the porch very easy (I seem to do most of my cooking in the tent porch...)
