£100 for a 100g saving on quilt?

So my order with UK Hammock was rudely refunded with no apology after they messed me around, not answered questions and did not deliver as multiple times 'promised'

BUT I am very lucky as have someone coming from USA to bring an enlightened Equipment Quilt (hooorayyyyyyy SOOOO exited)

So the question I am posing to myself is that Hammock Gear (also US and heard VERY good things about them ) sell an economy quilt

roughly £150 for 800g

OR EE
roughly £230 for 700g

OR Pushing the boat out for the 950 fill

roughly £315 for 600g

THE DECISION IS SOOO HARD!!

I do a lot of hiking with my gear and hate suffering (and yess sometimes it feels like torture : ( ... it has to be easy and funnn! I want to do the Mt Everest base camp Trek carrying my own equipment so surely even 200g weight saving is Massive... but is it worth the £200 (which I DO have in my bank account but find difficult to justify)

Any thoughts or whAt you lot would do / decide ??

I suppose you have compared the HG Burrow Econ with the EE Revelation. Weight and down quality aside, you have to be aware that the sizing is very different: in order to get the same size as a Regular/Regular EE quilt, you'd have to order a Long/Wide one from HG which pushes the price much closer. Between the two, I'd go for EE.

I'd think a bit differently.

Think in terms of layers.

A super warm quilt will gather dust most of the year.

If I were you I would
- get a pair of down trousers.
- get Scotty at bespoke ultralight to make you an apex 133 over quilt. The synthetic top quilt will reduce condensation issues from using an outer down layer for several days in serious sub zero conditions.

With your EE quilt you will have a flexible setup that you can use in all seasons.

if you're serious about your walking (and i assume by Everest basecamp you are) then i would definitely go for the EE. You'll only regret it going for the one you don't really want.

After a while of lightening the load, £1 per 1g saved becomes common place. If you spent £250 on an UL tent to save a whopping half a kilo, that still only equates to £1 per 2g saved.

Its best not to justify these buys in terms of weight saved, more you want and need them for the hobby you enjoy.

Almost every time I've saved money getting cheaper stuff I end up later getting the one I wanted in the first place.
If your anything like me 150 + 315 is more than 315!
Being warm at night and getting a good night's sleep can make such a difference, having made a down quilt I think 315 for a top quality warm quilt is good value given the cosy of materials and just how much work is involved.

I seem to end up with a lot of second or sometimes third hand gear, apart from sleeping kit and footwear which I purchase new. I'm not saying I don't buy new but with a bit a patience the kit I want usually comes along. It's a good way to save a few pennies and there's never a shortage of quality used kit getting moved on in this hobby.

2nd hand purchases that come to mind: cuben Duomid, cuben Solomid, ULA CDT, ULA Relay, ULA AirX, Ti Tri Caldera Cone, Bushbuddy, BD Trail poles, MSR Titan kettle, JRB Sierra Sniveller quilt (exception), ti Honey stove, Primus ETA pots, Snow Peak solo set, and lots more I can't remember.

I can't remember the last time i didnt buy second hand or from a shop with a decent sale reduction. It depends if you have the time to wait, and not so easy if you haven't got something else to use in the meantime.

if you specifically want an EE (I'd go for the 700g) you may have a long wait fo 2nd hand, i had searches set up for over a year, and ended up with a Panyam new (reduced 20% in a sale)

I agree with @Shewie. I've bought loads of mint quality 2nd hand gear by just keeping my eyes and ears open especially on the forums.
Eg Golite packs, Cuben Duomid, Cuben Solomid XL, Stephensons Warmlite 2R and a lovely black Cuben Khufu. Those savings felt good ! Whether I really need the shelters is another matter.... especially if you ask my girlfriend !

Can you divulge the program /s used for that please :)
Besides eBay alerts, Used Outdoor Gear Search is pretty good for US forums and it has email alerts.

So, she doesn't share your Cuben fetish? Strangely, non-SWOT* spouses rarely do...

I use the 860fp from extrem textil which will be roughly 950fp by the US standard and I absolutely think it's worth the money. The bigger clusters clump in a good way to minimise down shift and make a super luxurious quilt too. Though I've never used the EE down though

I too have bought a lot of kit 2nd hand. Especially, US sellers with US brand kit ……you can usually persuade them to post with 'adjusted' customs values which is a great 'saving'.

Only 2 large items have I been 'duped/p*ssed off with' the item. A tent (from US) and a sleeping bag (UK) - In both cases from climbing forums. Left me with the impression that climbers use their gear 'hard' and are prone to 'bullshit' when they want to sell .

I bought new stuff mostly of late and it seems to be staying pristine in a cupboard a lot at the moment :(

On a positive note I'm losing a few hundred grammes a week from my middle and saving cash on travel with my newish cycle commute :)

Roll on the summer hols....
