Improving sleeping mat R value.

I have been trying out how to boost the warmth of my mat as looking
to buy a new wider mat but keep it light and not to carry a heavy/warm one when not needed.
I normally open my bags like a quilt.

I have been trying to create warmth using a lifesystem emergency blanket.
Tests was done using an Multi mat 25mm inflatable foam mattress.
The bag is a mammut +4 comfort rating. https://www.ultralightoutdoorgear.c...survive-outdoors-longer-emergency-blanket-p14
First I laid the mat on top of the blanket and nothing happened.
Second attempt I laid the blanket over my mat and slipped inside the bag and it become very snug.
Then I wrapped the remainder of the blanket over the top of the bag and become
too warm. With all the tests I was only in the bag for 10 minuets.
Unsure but maybe to try 2 blankets which will be very warm and a Klymit V2 which in this set up
should be ok to maybe 0degrees, but certainly worth a try.

I used a Karrimat at the weekend. I was surprised how warm it was, and would have been quite comfy if it wasn't for having to be greatful for the pitch we had.
It wasn't over cold but some drafts were present. Temperature wise I was comfortable. I slept in a pair of terras (to keep the hairy caterpillars at bay) and a 200g woolpower (which weighs less than my Rab Meco merino hoody that is thinner!)
We had no ground sheet other than a couple of opened out bin liners and for a cover a hat and my AHE top quilt.
I'd be interested in improving the r value of the mat as it's surprisingly light... Sadly it won't be used much again as it tends to give the game away attached to my bag...

Use a thinner one and open it up in your pack and pack gear inside it,like a bag wall if you get me..

I have lost my edge and never thought on that.
It's only to put me on till I can replace my exped with a brand new one (worth the extra for the warranty) as my old one died.... Sort of... Now its a floatation device / raft.
On recommendation and my past history I'm tempted to get a ridgerest or naturehike z rest knockoff to pit me on through the start of winter....
Just packed my trusty steed (Ohm 2.0) and I'm back in stealth mode with added internal water protection thanks to your reply..... Cheers

15kg is going some, good effort
Cheers, it's been well overdue and thus forum has helped.... I can't afford top end ultralight gear, but have some decent kit and realised that why spend money to lose base weight when I can lose base weight and save money, eating clean and not drinking like a viking lol
Aswell as having to give up my job due to rotator cuff injury and a pulled back.
When I started seeing the physio I decided losing a bit of weight would help my back... Sadly the rotator has been the worst... It is improving and I'm hopefully going back to my old old job.
Reducing ale by 98% has been a big help on its own and
I have been doing a sort of paleo diet combined with plenty of hiking and walking. Ive done over 8 miles today, nearly 3 of with a 10kg weight. I feel alive and have even started mixing in a bit of moderate running.
My body has adapted to not having the sugar levels it used to and I can eat all the growlers I want without the pastry...
I really do feel great and tipped in at 84. 9 this morning from 100kg about 10 weeks back... I'm aiming to lose another 7kg an then maintaing it with hopefully a good work/life balance.

Use your ground sheet as a picnic blanket, or emergency blanket which keeps your bottom warm too

This foam is my staple insulation. I've ben using it under airmats for many years now, and also in hammocks. 3mm thick, with closed cell foam. A single piece of 70cm x 150cm weighs around 60g. 1 piece is comfy down to about 5c for me, I tend to take 2 though, this keeps me warm to -3, then I really want a third layer.
Not very hardwearing, they need some duck tape repair quite regularly when used on the ground. I get about 100 nights out of one before it's pretty dead.

I keep thinking about using an aerosol adhesive to glue a polychryo layer onto a 80 x 200cm bit of this to increase puncture resistance.

And when/if it tears and how much will the glue weigh?

Maybe adhesive Velcro pads. One on each corner to attach the Polycro !!!!

It needs to be a flexible glue. Carpet spray glue is too brittle. 3m spray mount would be first to try. I think that some thinned PU painted on as a glue would do it permanently.

I laminated one with carpet protector roll a couple of years ago. Both parted company on the third day. :)

Just as well I just thought about it!
Perhaps best left separate then. Or perhaps 3m cuben type transfer tape could work?

If they are to be used in the Summer or warmer months I’ll may use one but if its for a specific trip or to create
A sleep system I’ll put my money on branded gear thats driven the research to where these pads/mats are now
