A conversation that took place between two members earlier today, made me think.
We all have books we've read (backpacking related) and others we'd like to read, how about a book swapping/lending section.

    Just a thought

I partook in something similar many moons ago on another forum, all went swimmingly until someone did a bunk with some valuable books, folk had their entire libraries up for lending but they soon took them down after that.

There's a lot of trust involved, especially with folk you don't necessarily know that well. I'm not sure I'd dedicate a whole section to it but maybe we could have a sticky thread in the swaps section and see how it goes?

Book swop should work OK, but lending is going to go pear shaped at some point as Shewie indicated, not necessarily through theft but failing to return in time, accidental damage, lost in transit etc.

I like the idea also Shewie.

If anyone wants to kick the thread off with the offer of a loan or swap, if it gets enough interest I can sticky it at some point.

How about OS maps adding to this?

How about forgetting all the negatives with this. Be positive, trust each other and give what is a sound, charitable and honourable idea by HH a go. If I have a map, guide or book a regular forum user wants it's yours to borrow

It's a noble proposition but one I'd personally be wary of. I'd be ok with some of my books but others I'd never post out & would only lend to mates. The Backpackers Club had a library of books for years. They'd post them out free of charge too if I remember rightly It was closed down last year as no-one was using it. I think the amount of info on the 'net is largely responsible & there's likely folk like me that will buy a book if they need it rather than borrow it.

Your probably right Ross. It's the out of print or odd guidebooks I would be thinking of. But as said I still have faith in the outdoor fraternity. Considering.
    1. Coming back to red squirrel glencoe 20 yrs ago as dark find tent and contents gone.
    2. Going to bed at 1900 in argentiere refuge chamonix getting up at midnight to find rope and rack gone from storage cubical.
    3. Last yr going to my first and I add my last bushcraft show to find stuff stolen from under my tarp during the day while looking at sharp shiny stuff.

Still have faith as I could write a 5k word essay on so many acts of kindness

Just saying I've put a post up on "wants" regarding guide books. I don't mind giving and posting (just refund p&p, unless a reciprocal swap) my 'old' guide books of trails I've walked (I'll never walk em again anyway).
Guide books are well known publishers: Cicerone Press, HMSO, etc......
I'll list mine if anybody wants? Which thread shall I use?
