We (me and the area forester) thought it quite odd at the time. It could've been machine damage but we didn't think so. I occasionally camp in the area but apart from the usual (fox, polecat, deer) not seen anything else.
It remains a bit of a mystery.

    Young tree or old?

Younger trees can be very badly scratched up by deer fraying the bark

No I'm quite familiar with tree fraying from deer.
    Big tree .
