I am looking a child carrier (backpack) for my child. He is now almost 10 months, old enough to be taken to the wilderness.
I have been thinking of Osprey, they probably have the best harness. Anyway, I was hoping that some of You might know of something that is more lightweight ;P

For a 10 month old, you can't beat a Baby Bjorn, good up to 3 year old, you carry the baby on the front so you can still have a backpack. I used one for both of mine (now 15 and 17 year old!) and I know so many parents now who still swear by them. Can usually find them 2nd hand on ebay for a reasonable price, specs are here for the lightweight mesh version

We also used a BabyBjorn which was very good but we were even happier with an Ergobaby carrier which is good for 3 to 20 kg and allows front, hip and back carrying. For hiking, it easily beat the frame carrier we used for a while, far lighter and actually more comfortable.

That's the sort of thing I meant by frame carrier (ours wasn't an Osprey but another expensive brand). Didn't like it at all: very heavy, very bulky and as soon as the kids can walk around you end up with deadweight that is only useful on the way back when they get tired.

Try to borrow a big carrier to see if you like it, you may have all you need already with the Tula since it looks like it also allows back-carry.

I would say a woman is the best child carrier.

You're only saying that 'cos you haven't got a homicidal sleep-deprived mother in the room

No idea why, but tried a baby Bjorn once when my son was tiny and put my back out for a week.

We tried out the baby Björn some 25 years ago. Never really enjoyed it, but we loved the framed carrier we replaced it with. Used it for two kid then sold it. I'm sure better models are available now. The framed carrier is also handy when taking a rest.
