Hey guys, just saying hello, Been on BCUK and Songofthepaddle for the last 15 years, give or take 5 years, as the memory isn't as sharp now days. I believe Shewie (Rich) is admin on here, camped and paddled with him before ( if it's the same shewie). Been a ultralight convert for the past 10 years and solo hiked ultralight Lands end to John O'groats in 2014 over 70 days, linking up as many trails as possible and staying away from all cities and big towns while wild camping the whole way, if I remember correctly my full pack weight was 5.5kg including luxuries. Great to see a UK based ultralight forum up and running now as in the past I had to get most info from US based forums.

All's good mate, looking forward to the better weather to get back hiking, had a good year last year doing 4 different trails....suppose I'll just have make to with parking my ass round the wood stove in the tipi. You still paddling mate?

Not wetted a paddle for three years, I never bought any roof bars for my car, changing it in May though so I’ll be sorting some out then.

Been enjoying getting out in the hills but I do miss those beach camps under the chute :)

I bought one of those too, composite Northshore Atlantic, a bargain locally, not used it yet as I wanted to do a paddling course before heading out.

Maybe we should hook up sometime and you can give me some tips :)

Sounds good Rich, I went for a 16ft Dagger Stratos in a cool flame colour, did a bulk group buy with big Jason and our mate Raymond....the shop owner had a big smile that day I tell you. I'll speak to big Jason and maybe see if he fancies a wee paddle down in the lake district with the yaks once the weather improves or if you'd rather hit the lochs so we can wild camp for a couple of days that cool too

    Hi All,

Nice to find a UK oriented website for lightweight backpacking. I'd been lurking on for a while and trying to mentally substitute "midges" for "bears" and "rain" for "sun" but it wasn't quite working for me :).

Anyway, I'm Patrick, I've been lucky enough to live near Inverness for the last ten years, drawn here from England by both the walking and sailing opportunities. I predominantly do both those activities along with my wife and three children and have recently been enjoying the fact that now the kids are all in double figures age-wise they can carry enough gear to make proper backpacking trips a reality again.

Inverness - a great place to get to some of the 'best' bits of Scotland  - but you know that already :D.

    Hi all
I'm Gwen, a Scouter & Mom based in the Surrey Hills.
I'm in the process of shedding some pack weight while ensuring my comfort isn't compromised too much. Last season I was rocking a 15kg pack weight, I'm hoping to get it down a bit.
    - My 1st gen lightweight thermarest delaminated, so was warranty replaced with a full length pro lite. It seems thin. Would love to try something super minimalistic.
    - My Bob Saunders Jetpacker Plus is still in awesome condition, but I've got a Lanshan 2 on the way to give me a bit more room with less weight.
    - My Mountain Equipment 4 season bag is getting long in the tooth but I do love it. An aegismax nano is on the way. Am I going to regret buying such a cheap bag?
    - My old Deuter 45+10 has an Osprey Exos 38 to keep it company.

    Anyway, that's where I'm at.

Interested to find out how you get on with the nano @Guinevere . Been looking myself, but on a self imposed “no gear” month:frown:

Hi Gwen - I bought an Aegismax bag a year or so ago. Nothing hugely bad about it but the quality is not great. Two downsides...

The warmth rating is exaggerated. I used it a couple of weeks ago in about -5° and I spent a uncomfortable cold night even after piling my clothes back on.

It is super-slidey. I can't keep this bag on my Exped mat on even flat ground.

Hi, I've been lurking for a few months and finally dipped my toe into the forum in an attempt to buy a Solplex. No luck there so thought I should formally say Hi.
I am originally from Canada but have been in the UK for over 30 years (eek!). I did a bit of backpacking as a youngster and now that I've retired in the Highlands I have started to hike again on some short trips.
I would like to do a coast to coast but will likely avoid the TGOC - for me, solitude is a big part of the allure of backpacking. My other goal is to do the Cape Wrath Trail but I want to get more experience before I start that.
Thanks for all the great advice that I've already seen and if you need to make space in your cupboard for a new tent and are looking to sell on a lightweight 1p tent, feel free to send it my way .
