Cuppa pics and also camelids

Despite pre-warming the canister and putting in a cozy before leaving home, I reached the limit of a canister-mounted stove. This needed some persuasion (hand warming and gentle shaking) to produce sufficient heat to boil water. I guess I need to get a remote stove with pre-heat tube for day walks (although in general I prefer alcohol stoves, when I'm not camping I don't have enough patience).

Have you tried sitting the canister in a shallow container of water?

I've seen claims on backpackinglight.com of functioning canister top stoves at -30°F using this method with an isobutane/propane mix. Warmer water ( fresh urine?:angelic:) will obviously help more.

I've sometimes "enlivened" a cold sluggish canister by popping it (after a wipeing) into the partially boiled water in my pan.

Not tried that, though there wasn't much water to hand. Surprised how much (temporary) impact of swirling the canister had versus warming in my hands (which hurt...)

I confess this is not a cuppa, it's actually food. But it's a pot with a view. Plus I get to amuse myself by telling every one I "ate out" and watching their horrified reactions when they think I went to a restaurant. :rolleyeses:

It's 100% Stormin' Norman (RIP :frown:) - his Cold soak optional system, using the Mini screw burner. I love it because I can cold soak my meal while still walking, and then when I'm ready to eat all I have to do is boil it up. Takes less than 5 mins and uses less than 20ml fuel. It was a darn sight cheaper than a Vargo Bot as well! Although for some reason the foil in my pot cosy stuck to my pot today (never happened before??) and ripped some of the foil off, so now I'm going to have to source some foil tape to mend it.
