If you're looking for a lower price on the Kakwa 40, we are releasing a more affordable version in UltraGrid fabrics in about a month. We haven't set an exact price for that yet, but it's about $50 less.

We have the UltraGrid version out now in the 55L for $199 and it weighs about 1oz more, so I expect a similar difference for the 40L.

Well I just received my 2024 Kakwa 40 Ultragrid (large).

Impressed with the shipping speed - ordered 26th July 10pm; delivered 1st August 1pm.

Kaviso price $US 218.87(inc shipping); Import charges £50.17 (total equivalent to about £220).

Weight on my scales is within 5g of that advertised, so full marks there. Build quality looks good, and the Ultragrid fabric seems very tough.

I can confirm a normally packed Scarp 1 (with arch pole) will fit nicely into the taller side pocket - the flat-bottomed side pockets were the main reason I bought this in preference to an Atom+, plus the load lifters, both of which Tom at Atom Packs told me were unavailable as custom options.

Definitely roomy enough to contain all my gear and food for a 3-4 nighter without bits dangling off it, although I will need to modify where I pack some things.

It is going to take me a while to evaluate this pack's performance, because it feels so different to the pack I'm used to. But unlike the Gossamer Gear G4-20 I tried last, it doesn't instantly feel 'wrong'. If this works out, I've cut 250g from my base weight. If it doesn't, I'll offer it for sale first here.

Sometimes you just have to go the @cuprajake route...

Not exactly 'drop' related but I had mine out in - well, almost.. it was Dovedale stepping stones just at bottom of Thorpe Cloud and reminded me of the queues up at Everest - the wild today. The Kakwa 40 or 55, such a lovely pack!

What's the best craic with ordering these, valley and peak 283 or from durston direct for 176, likely to get taxed out the wazoo?

I think the tax on our packs is the same tax as pretty much every pack. You've got VAT of about 20% which is included in a higher price if you're buying a pack within Europe, or it is charged separately if you buy abroad, but either way you are paying that same tax. So it is not fun to get a tax bill, but it is the same taxes. It works out a bit less expensive to buy directly from us because there isn't a retailer margin added in as well.
