Flatcatgear Ocelot gas burner windshield testing.

Flatcatgear Jon Fong has just done a few efficiency tests of stoves with and without his new windshields, in no wind and measured wind.

Here is the video,

and a screenshot of results

Screenshot_20200618-222639.png

Always surprised when I see gas users not using a windshield of some sort. As I knew that wind increases boil times, and therefore fuel use.

But didn't think it was to this extent with such a small amount of wind.

Looks like a screen is well worth it.

Yes, after watching that I've started playing with my empty beer cans again -haven't managed anything that will sit inside the cup with the canister yet. In the wind I always stick something around it though. The Windmaster especially and Amicus are good ....but good savings to be had. Especially liked the still pic of the bent flame in quite light wind.

Hi Jon. Welcome

Saw your post on Facebook earlier.
I like the wind tunnel!
And the graph.

If you have a URL for an online location of of your graph image, you can post using the image link button. The URL needs to end in an image file extension such as .jpeg...

(Not sure if Google photos work)

But to upload files directly here you need to be a subscriber.

Well, it seems that you need to be a donating member to post pictures. I am looking to see how to become a donating member.
Currently, we support the BRS 3000t, PocketRocket 2, PocketRocket Delux and the Fire Maple 300T (Wasp or Hornet). After the initial release, we will be reaching out to see what other stoves should be added to the system. - Jon

PS The BRS 3000t was the poorest perfromance in the wind while the PocketRocket Deluxe was the best.

I think that it's only direct upload that requires subscription. If you click the little postcard symbol above the box

You should get a pop up like this...

And then you just add, by pasting the url of your image... It needs to be forum compatible like Flickr etc.
Hope that helps?

Looks like 7-8 is reaching the limit with that pot/windscreen. Interesting that the stove variable pretty much disappears with your screen. Makes the lighter stoves more appealing.

I like the design; simple and effective. Surprised the light breeze made such a difference to the flame pattern.

I’ve always fancied trying one of Jon’s designs, snow leopard for my MSR Titan Kettle springs to mind, and now this for my alpkit 750 mug, but the cost of importing always puts me off.

A few more offerings and a “group buy” may be on the cards in the near future.

Crude but effective wind barrier V1.
Only works with mug pots that have a smaller diameter than the pan supports as the supports poke through holes in the shield. Closes with a slit and tab at the back and fits in the pot. 10g.

I like it very much. Well done. You could sell them. I tried somthing like this but still got quite a bit of wind from below the screen. Distorted the flame but it did make contact with the edge of my cup at least. I have an issue with my cup/pot as they are the squat Evernews. So I need to find a way to extend 2 pieces vertically for more coverage.
How did you join the two pieces? Have you tried it in some wind yet?
Let's know how it goes.

The 2 pieces are joined with JB Weld with aluminum tape one the top and has held up ok, maybe 25/ 30 times.
Not done any formal testing but might be interesting to compare. Anecdotally, it seems to work so even a small saving is good in the long run.

Nice work. Would really be interested to know how much it saves. Had my little attempt hooked up near a fan probably about 10-15 kms/hr. What is JB weld? Need specialist equipment?
Edit. Probably should be asking you about this on the DIY thread. Oops.

Hi Jon. Please consider adding the Soto Amicus to your offerings.

My Soto Micro Regulator Stove would be another good candidate for an Ocelot windscreen fitment option. It doesn't have the concave burner head of the Amicus or Windmaster stoves so really suffers in the wind.

And this is the problem, we all have different stoves. I'd like to buy an Ocelot windscreen. But don't want to have to buy another stove to be able to get one. And i can't see any version being made for any of the other canister mounted stoves i already own.

Great windshield system though:thumbsup:.

Talk about crude. Gone back to the tin foil.
This morning with about 20-25 km/hr winds.

Add me to the Amicusers request Jon.
