Follows on from those muppets raving in Buttermere and blasting their mischief across FB. Police found them but had no real way to deal with them.

The local council since updated their Public Space Protection Order… This PSPO specifically cites ‘wildcamping’ in the broader understanding and not the specific areas tolerated by the NT and LDNP. It has to be noted that areas of The Lake District ARE tolerant to wildcamping, unlike most of the rest of England & Wales and this PSPO is a specific tool to empower the police and council officials.

This empowerment for the police is long overdue IMO.

c) No person shall camp or sleep overnight with or without a tent, inclusive of the activity referred to as Wild Camping, where their behaviour, and the behaviour of their visitors or associates, causes, or attracts anti-social behaviour and/or has a detrimental effect on the quality of life of those in the locality throughout the geographical area of public land within Cumberland exclusively.

Except I can foresee this being negatively used and abused against innocent, well behaved and conscientious wild campers, who might be fined and moved on by over zealous coppers who might interpretate the wording to mean ALL wild campers, not just anti social ones!
And they could argue that anyone pitching a tent on private land without permission could have a detrimental effect on the quality of life of those in the locality! Belligerent land owners especially could also use this as a useful anti trespassing tool to keep wild campers off their land.
"Be careful what you wish for", "This will open a can of worms" and "It's a slippery slope" are all sayings that spring to mind...

I disagree. No ‘Copper’ is going to be anywhere near the 400m or over the ‘last fell wall’ at anytime now or in the future - where the current tolerations by the LDNP and NT already allow Wildcamping. Like the rest of the UK, other locations for such - which might include lower level wildcamping - like on the Cumbria way or The Lakeland Way there will unlikely be any intervention. No negative abuse will ever occur.

I had a pleasant interaction with a land owner, well below the 400m ‘last wall’ criteria not long ago whilst he was herding sheep. He popped over for a look, found I wasn’t burning his land but instead enjoying his view and he was happy to carry on herding whilst exchanging pleasantries. There was only me. It was 7.00am.

Landowners are not belligerent. They only become belligerent by vandalistic occupiers.
