Got a £160 voucher for UOG from a group of friends for my birthday and I'm not sure what to use it for. Atm I'm thinking about an exped synmat HL LW, they're equally as comfy as my current STS UL insulated in L and 100g lighter, but as yet undecided. I don't think I really need anything, certainly not of that value.

What would you buy? Any gems you've spotted on the site I might not have?

How long before the voucher expires ? If a fair amount of time you might think of something at a
much later date .Could come in handy then .

Need and want are very different things ;) I don't think my gf would be very happy if I sold it do I pretty much have to buy something.

Not sure, they just send an email out and there's very little info there. Certainly no expiry date. I don't foresee "needing" anything in the next couple years as I've replaced a lot of my gear recently and I'm fairly happy with how it functions and the weights.

    :p

If you don’t need anything now hold onto it until a sleeping pad develops a leak, you damage a trekking pole etc?

Or put it into consumables. Dunno if they sell dehydrated foods, but general first aid supplies, insect repellent, nikwax etc? Or more “consumable” clothes (such as socks, underwear)? Have a favourite pair of shoes? Maybe grab a second or third?

Still, is just hold onto until you actually need something.

This is the thing, I've just got new poles, yeah they can be damaged but have a 3 year no qs asked guarantee (komperdell). My WP jacket is like new and I really like it (berghaus hyper 100). And the sts pads are bomb proof, never say never. Just got new tees, windshirt, shoes I pick up on sale etc. I do need socks.

Thanks @Balagan. I kinda figured there'd be a time limit.

I think I'm talking myself into getting the pad at this point. I'll probably procrastinate for a few more weeks then order one. Unless anyone comes up with a great suggestion.

Not trying to throw you off the Exped but have heard of many failures of baffles in the Expeds. Were it me I would go the Xtherm (and I did) as it sounds like you are after a cold weather mat, if it suited your set up space wise, comfort desires etc. of course

If I remember correctly - Exped have said that the baffle failures were in earlier product runs and they have rectified the problem now.
Certainly we had 2 mats with baffles go in early Synmat mummy style mats (orange colour). Replaced promptly with no questions asked and we've had no further problems.

If you have the funds to buy an Exped down mat UL …. go for it. "You know you deserve it" :D.

Thanks! I've seen loads of reports saying the same... yeah, it was the first (couple?) of runs that had the issues. They were fixed ages ago, so they say, though apparently they're very good about replacing failures. Im looking for something r3+... nothing excessive. I had a neoair xlite and it was ok, too narrow but otherwise not uncomfortable, just not brilliant and very noisy. The valve is awful though. Total pita to inflate and deflate. STS is the best I've seen but exped not far behind. If I'm getting a new mat it will be an exped.

Cathy, if I ever plan to go lower than -20 I'll get a downmat. Otherwise massive overkill for my purposes :D

Just pretend you don't have the voucher and can't afford to buy anything then you will want everything....

Yes but ever so comfy :D. Mine comes out at the least suggestion of cold.
I was lucky to pick it up half price years ago - glad I did.

No worries, loved my STS for ease of inflation and deflation. The references I made to failures were recent, but maybe we get (or have stockpiled as it's a smaller market) the older models here?

I'd buy a duplicate of something that you already have and really really like.

As you know, the day you need a new one and want the exact replacement, as you love it so much. They will have stopped making them!
