I can remember doing something to the lid but not what I did or why
I had a Toaks 700 pot where I unrolled the edge of the lid to make it a better fit.
I think it was @Munro277 who folded the edges of one of his lids to make it more secure?
The mod above made the lid more secure (less likely to slide into the pot) but an issue with metal lids on the Petrel is that they are thinner than the plastic lid and hence the folding handle doesn't press down on them to stop the lid from falling off.

So it was you and I accidentally made @Munro277 think he lost his marbles there for a bit. 🤣

A simple bit of reflectix will hold the Toaks 95mm lids in place on the Petrel. The lower one seats a little better on the pot but is a little more recessed so a double layer of reflectix would be more secure.
It might be easy enough to give the handles a slight bend near the center to form a slight apex. it would eliminate the extra piece. Does that make sense?

Thanks @Jon Fong. It was a bit fiddly but I just bent the handle so the angle on the right of the photos is more acute, then bent the insulated part of the handle upwards (from perspective of the photo) so is a spring fit and lays flat across the lid rather then just pressing on one side of the lid.

As a bonus the original plastic lid will still fit. The other type of Toaks lid would need different adjustments to be held securely.

My Fire Maple Petrel pot was waiting for me when I got home. Did 3 different boil tests indoors (500ml line on the pot).

1: Using my original Fire Maple Hornet. It just fits in the slots as they are with a bit of wiggling. Rolling boil in 2'40" did it on scales and it just used 6g of fuel. Stove valve about ¾ fully open.

2: with Soto Windmaster and triflex potstand inserted into pot slots as per first test. Rolling boil in about 3'00", but had valve set maybe ⅔ open so as to stop flames blasting out past heat exchanger.

3: Again Soto WM, but this time with pot sat on top of pot support, not inserted in the slots. Valve open a similar amount as test 2. Boil time was 2'37" this time. So significantly faster.

Didn't measure fuel use with Soto as was in a different building.

It's a similar boil time range to the Soto with my modded Jetboil Pot.

4: Hornet with pot sat high as test 3. Valve again ¾ open Boil time 3'32" . Quite a difference and the opposite way round as the rest with the Soto.

I'll need to do more field tests I guess, but the Petrel pot itself looks useful and definitely much faster boil time than a non HX pot.

And I may just modify the slots to accommodate the Hornet more easily.

Due to weight and compactness, I'll probably use the Petrel pot with gas when out hiking, and keep the old Jetboil Pot setup for work.

With the Windmaster and Triflex inserted into the slots I found that you can turn it up full with very limited loss of efficiency (and about 2 minutes boil time for 500ml). With a non HX pot of the same diameter turning up the power really lost efficiency, and the HX ot always gave a faster boil time.

I always weigh the water for accuracy but did check out the 500ml graduation on the Petrel pot and it is quite accurate (which is often not the case!)

That's interesting. When I turn my Windmaster up full, the flames come out quite some way (2cm) past the outside of the heat exchanger. It felt somewhat dangerous and maybe wasteful. The same thing happens with the Jetboil Pot, and I've caught the neoprene on fire a few times over the years. 😁

To be honest I did the test in light conditions so may not have noticed; and when I've used the combination when camping it has been at lower power output settings
[Edit - the stove can flare alarmingly when lit with the pot in situ!]
