Ah damn, I had high hopes for it too! The name listed on my receipt is 'boning rigilene' which I think goes in basques and not the heavy boning in proper corsets, no idea if or how that's different though.

How did you get webbing to be stable? mines never worked very well. The only decent stiffener I've used is the plastic that goes around cardboard boxs.

Box strapping is quite a good idea, never thought of that. Stiff enough to trip postmen over all around the country. :)

Webbing is heavy and I much prefer a stiffer closure. Even the stiff structure Polyester I used wasn't very good. Plastic bottle strip was lighter than webbing anyway.

I used a strip of milk bottle (PET) for the last project, a roll top pack closure. It's holding up well after 50 odd days of use so far..

Important not to use Polypropylene as it's self hinging and will go floppy.

Plastic strips from a milk bottles worked great on a drybag opening thanks @Teepee
Just going to seam seal them with silicone white spirit mix, they're not going to carry down so don't need to be watertight.

Tyvek by the Metre £5.00

Is this okay for use as groundsheet underlay (like how you would use Polycro)

Any place sell better?

Yes, its 1443R soft structure tyvek. Has more of a fabric feel compared to hard structure tyvek. I used to make groundsheets out of it. Since i stopped someone on ebay has started making identical versions of them. price difference is not that great if the size works for you.

Picharpak Workshop which is based in Hong Kong sells what is apparently the same grade of Tyvek (42.4 gr per metre) for half the price (3.50 USD a metre in 150 cm width). Unlike the rest of his shop, this doesn't include shipping so that might be a deal breaker though I doubt it. He says it can be used for ground sheets but one side is more abrasion resistant than the other.

If you're looking at a project involving Velcro here's something to consider.

One of the things I noticed about my ZPacks ArcBlast was that the Velcro they use is ONE-WRAP.

ONE-WRAP has loops on one side and hooks on the reverse, so ZPacks sew one side of their packs with the ONE-WRAP hooks facing out and the other side with the hooks facing in (loops out).

ONE-WRAP is stiffer than the regular stuff so it is a good choice for dry bag type closures. Another benefit is that the 'hook' side has low profile hooks so that it doesn't catch/snag the fabric of anything that comes into contact with it as much. My MYOG bivvy bag has some conventional (cheap) hook and loop stuff and it is continually catching on my quilt / clothing :( I'm going to replace it with the ONE-WRAP.

ZPacks sells 1/2 inch ONE-WRAP in its Materials section and it also looks to be readily available to UK buyers on eBay here for example I think it's worth spending the extra money.

That's what I use too mostly.
Seems pointless to use the expensive dyneema stuff on a stuffsac - overkill cubed
I've taken to using cheap, brightly coloured synthetic shoe laces for stuff sacks. Being wide, they provide enough friction not to need a cord lock in most cases but not the king of friction that will cut through a bag's channel.

Anyone have a spare section of very strong Velcro? Or a recommendation of which to buy (preferably eBay/in the UK)

I've got various odd lengths of Velcro in different widths - what width were you thinking of and length?

In Post #82 (second hyperlink) that eBay seller I've used before and it's genuine Velcro One Wrap in various widths. This is ideal stuff for roll-top closures, as used by ZPacks, it's thicker and seals very well IMO.

You don't say what application but the strongest I've found is the 3M Dual Lock (available on eBay), heavy duty version NOT the low profile which has limited life. Downside is that its not cheap, 4 - 5mm mated thickness & only comes self adhesive; for sticking to fabric/ grosgrain I've primed with contact adhesive which seems to work OK.

Cheers chaps, it's just to secure the metal frame in my new pack and stop it riding upwards out of the channels.

I'm sure I've got some but can't find it

I'll triple check and then no doubt order something that you've linked to above

Does anyone know of a source for proper quality elasticated fold-over tape (as used on cuffs etc.)?

I'm looking for something that won't bobble after the first couple of uses.

TIA.

I've used 12mm elastic braid to bind edges before. Worked fine and hasn't pilled yet. May be too strong for your application? other than that @Teepee is right, every lycra binding I've had on jackets always pills.

Thanks @Mole, @Teepee and @craige. It's for a lightweight windshirt so the Extrem stuff or the link that Pete provided look suitable. Thing is I've got a Rohan primaloft jacket that gets used a lot for everyday wear and its elasticated cuffs and collar haven't pilled at all in 6+ years. Some durable but light stuff must out there somewhere which is frustrating.
