The thin end of the wedge!

Dartmoor National Park Authority’s latest campaign to restrict nuisance wild campers.

    Extract from the Princetown Gazette

"As part of the Devon County drive for a cleaner countryside, the Dartmoor National Park Authority have taken the unpresidented step of banning bright and colourful tents on Dartmoor Commons from June 1st 2021.

The unusual step was declared in 'The way forward’ - Cleaner Dartmoor 2021 business plan released today by DNPA. Branded by some as policing the unpoliceable, the measure has met a great deal of support from locals and visiting walkers alike who say that the visual influence of wild campers on the countryside is extremely important, and that colour needs to be considered carefully.

"We can all do our part in making the countryside a visually quiter place" said Gordon Palmer of Chagford "It’s about time something like this was done to limit this disgraceful impact on our beautiful moors”.

Plans to limit colourful tents will only apply to so called 'wild camping' on open moorland, normal 'paying' campsites may accept any colour of tent because the visual intrusion is contained in a small defined area.

Policing methods will include ranger patrols and a series of lectures at hostels to encourage peer group auditing with campers being encouraged to cut the guy lines and bend the tent pegs of red and yellow tents that they see pitched on Dartmoor”.

It's not just hue and saturation. Some tents stand out because they reflect more light. We need to ban all high albedo tents, white tents, as well as coloured.

    Yes, Dan that includes x-mids.

Now it does say "bright and colourful" but that's just sloppy. "Bright and/or colourful" please.

Given tents are made of plastic and thinking of the environmental impact, clearly all existing bright colourful tents should be grandfathered in.

Best way to achieve this would be simply to ban the manufactory, import and sale of all high albedo, etc, tents that weigh under, say, 5kg. Thanks to Brexit we can do this. :)

Though we may be hit with trade sanctions that destroy our UK tent industry if we do :(
