Shelter News - a thread for new shelter talk

I have heard nothing but good things about the Helm 1, a muscular little tent that I would consider as a winter camping replacement for my Lightwave tunnel tent when the time comes.
I’ve got a Helm 1. So nearly a great tent. Seems very sturdy although I’ve never been out in stupid winds. It’s a shame it’s not made out of lighter materials. It would also be better if they made the opening to the enclosed second porch bigger or extended the inner into it. The door side porch is a touch small. The inner pockets could be better positioned too. I’d redesign the guying layout as well so it had double guylines like Hillebergs. However, for the price, it’s a bargain.

A couple of weeks ago on Mallorca winds were forecast at 35km/h - gusting to 80km/h.....it was quite something to pitch in.

I headed for a locked refugio which proved quite a good windbreak...even so, it was quite ennervating

Thats the common sense approach Edh BUT you dont make Youtube Videos otherwise you would be out in the open on top of the mountain filming how strong the winds are whilst sat inside with the tent rocking cooking a massive steak🤣

I did watch a vid, and they person said you need the click bait titles for the youtube algorithm, its a business for them, they were open about it,

some people are just crazy, i went and didnt even check as it was in a paid forest, turns out they shut at 45mph gusts and it forecast 43

yeah 43mph gusts,i have now way to verify that as i dont have a youtubers wind-o-meter :)
As @fluffkitten said, there is a big difference between constant and gusts. Until you’ve verified how strong even a 30mph constant is (where you can just about stand upright) and a 40mph constant where you would be hanging on, barely able to stand, it is difficult to judge.

Anything which can stay standing in 40mph constant winds is a worthy shelter.

I’ve camped twice in one place, both times were extremely windy. First time was the worse in a proper mountain tent. When the wind hit at full gust the resistance of the tent against the wind made the earth move. It was a real physical thing. A Hilleberg Keron in the group had a snapped pole and was in a more sheltered spot.

Next time, same place, in a single pole tent I decamped at about 4 A.M and slept behind a rock. I’d spent far too long holding the tent up at that point. 5 hours later the wind speed had reduced to a 30mph constant and we were practically blown off the hill. A Terra Nova Quasar in the group was fine on that occasion.

In the Highlands I like to have bothies marked on my maps, I don't generally use them but it's good to have boltholes. In strong wind (much lower than 40mph) I'm heading downhill looking for somewhere sheltered. In trees, behind walls or big bolders, in dips in the ground etc.

I have been in winds of inexcess of 40mph on Cairngorm, so the wind was confirmed by the weather station. We were crawling. A four pole geodesic heavyweight expedition type tent might stand out in the open. Not a lightweight backpacking tent.

Always good to have a Plan B. I often modify my plans and cut short a walk so that I can retreat to a valley, and wind direction and strength is taken into account when I plan a walk, always like to have it at my back, especially when going high.

I just watched an intrepid YouTube Verner who appears to have pitched up for the principal purpose of sticking his wind-meter out of the door. He concludes, after three poles snapped, with the astonishing revelation that "All equipment has its limits". Happily, he was only 1.5 miles from his car - can it be entirely coincidental that so many bombproof shelters fail within this radius of the camper's vehicle?

Can't post a link because it's been disabled for this video, but if you want to enjoy it (and the litany of hilarious comments) it's called:

Yes, I saw that one yesterday. He has a very tolerant dog.

PS - don't forget to buy your Jervehiet dog shelter, as used by special forces!

advice is to double pole over 40mph, my £190 helm compact didnt need that and weighed less haha
You’ll like this from Terra Nova

Just saw this - 24 inch (yes, 24 inch) Easton stakes!

For that pitch on a saturated peat bog? You'd have to be careful placing them in the ground to avoid bending I suspect.

[Edit - much longer and they could serve a dual role as pole support for trekking pole tents]

A stiff breeze, perhaps?
Disappointing to see Terra Nova indulging in this kind of nonsense. Still, if that's what it takes to sell tents.....

Somewhat more impressed by this, which I watched when I was considering buying a Helm 1 before my Lightwave bargain came up.....
Even then, 50mph? Seems to be the magic figure to get views

I would guess the challenge to put one in a wind tunnel and prove it would fall on deaf ears. Few manufacturers will.
