Shelter News - a thread for new shelter talk

Seems a bit strange to have such a long section of your model struggling with your “wearable” mode in your promo video..
Also their solution to ponchos being unwieldy, to have it button closed, looks like it’d be quite clammy with all the extra material stuffed in there. So you lose the advantages of a poncho (ventilation) while still having the disadvantage of not having proper arm coverage. And it’s still long with lots of fabric so it’s still unwieldy.

Shelter mode looks cramped.

No need to comment on the various well known cons (and pros) of shelters that double as rain gear.

Why would anyone seriously want this contraption? Other than being good for a laugh? The gentleman wearing/posing it in the video should be made to use it exclusively for the duration of one of the more challenging US 'thru-hikes' as punishment. As the icing on the cake, he should have to answer an urgent and lengthy call of nature every night he's camped in the rain.

If a combo of UL jacket and separate shelter couldn't be had lighter and more effectively then it could be a goer.

To have enough fabric to turn a jacket into a shelter you need to fold that fabric at least a couple of times when in jacket mode, as it sort of can be seen in that video. Wearing something like that in mild temperature will make you more than wet on the inside.

When I used a Gatewood cape for a while, I found it great for chucking over me and the pack in a sudden cloudburst. If it was windy as well, then not so easy to get all the fabric under control. I kept a waist strap in the cape's pouch to sort that problem, but it did prevent adequate upper body ventilation. Continuing the march was ok unless the terrain was thorny scrub.

Saw this new Flames Creed chinese tarptent and and it reminded me of those chinese paintings of the improbably steep little mountains rearing out of the river plain you see on cheap (and priceless) vases. Mind you, those mountains will still be there after a windy night.

I think somebody on here bought one of these.

Useful additional tarp for a base camp or cheep spacious tarp for sheltered pitches in woodlands but nowhere exposed IMO ...

Well I'm relieved to see an owner agreeing with my armchair based assessment :D
No offence intended to anyone who's bought one but it definitely looks vulnerable.
The X-mid seems better proportioned and angled to deal with windy weather.

Useless even in a breeze even when hunkered down tight as possible. Collapses
Good for a picnic shelter on a Summers day walk
Or cut up to make summat else!!!

I used it once on a sheltered campsite as pary of 2 day walk. Its barely long enough but people thought it looked really cool. With 6 guys pulled out its reasonably stable but a faf to keep the door open if the tab is used as a guy point.

Im interested in the bivy. I hearded that it is too small to people around ~180cm, and since I use an inflatable pad I never pulled the trigger. Is it okey? How is your experience using it?
Im 177 and use it fine with an alpkit cloudbase or numo. I find it nice and use it in my asta mid too.

He says he couldn’t ever setup the Plexamid and now he’s found Utopia with basically the same setup LOL

I watched many of his vids and he seemed to have been on a search for that perfect shelter (for him) and I think he said in his earlier vid that he got in touch with some manufacturer and worked together to build one, I could be thinking of his backpack design thou.
