We're at that point in the year when my last trip out is done and I need a trip in the diary for early in the new year.

Our early in the year SW overnighter is approaching the point of becoming a tradition.

So let's start the annual wrangle over dates. 18th/19th Jan or 1st/2nd Feb work for me. What dates work for others?

Where do folk want to go? Dartmoor (almost part of the tradition) or somewhere different this year?

Either weekend currently works for me (subject to work commitments changing). Happy to go for either Dartmoor or Beacons.

Ok. Let's go with 18th/19th as that works for all the early responders.

We can sort out a location/route nearer the time.

Ok. Anyone interested in doing the route planning / navigation for the weekend? Suggested route anyone?

Evening all, both dates sound doable. Dartmoor is always good fun, happy to head up to the Brecon Beacons. Looking forward to seeing you all

Sorry folks but I'm now going to have to drop out of this one I'm afraid. Dates clash with an important appointment. I hope that you all have a wonderful time. Looking forward to seeing the photos

    Ok.

The plan is to meet in the foxtor café in Princeton with the aim of leaving at 10am sharp.

Route wil take us south and east to a wild camp at Huntingdon Cross.

Return route on Sunday will be via Ryder's hill, skirting Hexwothy and returning to Princeton via the conciencious objectors road.

Can you confirm if you are expecting to be with us for the weekend please.

My wife’s not back from London until Friday evening so I’m looking after the dogs until she’s home. Saturday morning for me.

Still trying to organise work to clear the weekend. However, if I’m clear then I’ll be down late Friday evening.

Looking like Neil, Jay, Justin and myself then.

Forecast isn't bad but expect a major bogtrot!

Sorry guys but I have been unable to shift work commitment ... which means I am unlikely to make it this weekend after all. :(
Looks like I am going to have to find another weekend to test my first ever paramo purchase.

    Enjoy the 'bogtrot'.

    @SafetyThird , @NEEpps , @Mole

Apologies all but I too need to pull out of the weekend meet.

I've gone and hurt my neck (just got up this morning to shooting pains across my right shoulder and I can't lift anything without serious pain - literally no more weight than a mug of tea), and the doc says I can't drive or carry a pack at present.

I've popped the intended route in the thread above.

A bit of additional detail on day 2 - I was going to go up pupers hill and then onto Snowdon on our way to Ryder's hill, then going north to hooten wheals mine workings and picking up the track from there towards Hexworthy.

Seriously miffed because the forecast is decent, and I could have done with a couple of days away from civilization.

Hope it goes well and hope to see you and others later in the year.

    Apologies once again.

Gents I'm sad to say I have to bail at the last minute. My neighbour is undergoing radiotherapy every day for a week at Exeter Hospital and his lift for tomorrow has fallen through so I'm going to be his taxi service tomorrow afternoon. Sorry not to make it particularly as it looks like the rain is finally going to stop for a couple of days. Hope you have a great weekend and see you at the next one.

Drove down Saturday morning and popped in the Fox Tor Cafe for a quick breakfast. weather was glorious, far to good to be a trek-lite meet. Took the road down to Two Bridges then made my way to the Devonport Leat. Texted @Mole. Followed the leat
to the point where it meets the Cowsic River .Cross at the fb at the weir to make my way up Beardown Tors, crossed the West Dart at the weir, up Longaford Tor, Higher White Tor and lower white Tor. Headed over Broad Down to the Waterfalls on the East Dart, camped a couple of hundred metres upstream.
About 16:30 heard some shouting :"what are you doing pitching here?" only to discover it was mole. Had a quick chat before he headed off to camp up high.
Had a leaky mat which made sleeping in -7 degrees a chore, having to re-inflate every couple of hours.
Once the temp had ,made it to a dizzy -5.5 I set off along the Sandy Hole Pass, along the North West Passage and met Mole up the top of Cut Hill. From there we headed south through semi frozen bog to the Beardown Man Standing Stone (below) and Devils Tor. More to Broad Hole and Holming Beacon and Pricetown.
The weather was the best I've had on Dartmoor with great clarity and views.
Only grumble was the amount of people out on the Moor wearing high street clothing like Paramo, Scarpa, arcteryx and even Barbour. Keep this clothing in mcdonalds or the Fox Tor cafe where it belongs.
Tried out my Rab Paradox and was very happy with it. Plenty warm enough with just a base t shirt in minus conditions. Like to the way the back is longer, no riding up with your pack.
