After the success of last years meet I'm proposing another early year meet.

Weekend of 21st/22nd Jan works for me. Venue TBA. Possibly Dartmoor, Exmoor, Brecons. Possibly something in mid Wales or Snowdonia if people want to travel up on Friday evening.

If you are interested please reply to the thread and we can sort out meeting points, lifts, route etc.

Argh. Unfortunately I'm already committed elsewhere that weekend otherwise it would be a given from me. Will have to be content with your trip report instead.

It's between training weekends, so could well be up for it if not been tempted North or South.

Nothing could be wetter than last weekend.

    Could it?

If you want to do Exmoor, I'm currently working out a "coast and combes" overnighter.

    Hmm dunno.
Ask the others who came last year if it was wet underfoot. It's normal for there.

50mm of rain in Exeter Saturday night so more on the moor, plus approaching similar amount last night... Still hammering down.
    Sogtastic.

Right then James. Currently attempting to restructure plans and commitments so that I can/may be able to get to this after all. Exmoor or South Wales would make it easier for me. Any further ideas from anyone?

It must be 25 years since I did an Exmoor overnighter so that suggestion gets my vote.

How is the route planning coming on Gadget?

What sort of distances you want?
    Anyone camping Friday night?

I'll be coming down early Saturday am.

Distances - a dozen miles a day maybe? Possibly a shorter 2nd day to allow a timely return to understanding other halves.

Like James I'll be down early on Saturday morning and need to return Sunday afternoon so around a dozen miles sounds good to me. Not been to Exmoor since I was a cadet in the late eighties so am open to route suggestions. Happy to trailstar or to hammock.

I have a couple of spots that should work for tree and ground dwellers.
So, longer first day shorter second. I will get my head over my maps and check with the pub if they are ok with leaving cars there overnight.

Cheers for putting yourself out Gadget, much appreciated mate. As with the other guys i will be heading over Saturday morning.

Hi gadget. Thinking about it, I may be a tad overambitious saying a dozen miles. Assuming we start walking at ten we have maybe 6 hours before setting up camp. Ten miles might be more realistic given that at least one in the party (me) won't be hill fit.

Got something that looks fun. Would a linear be OK, rather than a circular?
Bit of car-juggling, but we're grown-ups, we can do that sort of thing.
    Day one, 15.3km (9.5m)
Start at the Blue Ball Inn, Countisbury, head out to North Foreland point, eastwards to County Gate, then inland to overnight in a picturesque combe.
    Day two 14.5km (9m) with a 8.5km (5.3m) cop-out alternative
Head west crossing the Doone valley, Brendon common, Farley Water, Cheriton Ridge, Hoar Oak, up to the Exe Head and finish on the Simonsbath Road.

Yes, I'm still in but having trouble uploading your files to Quo mapping. Doesn't want to show the routes whatever I try. Will look over route the old fashion way using a paper map tonight.
Fine with a linear route if we can sort cars/lifts and as with Jamess, may need to have a shorter day 2 (depending upon time striking camp.)

    Sounds good to me :)

Downloaded and tested the files in Memory Map and Google Earth, no problem.
