I think I just signed myself up for this

Anyone else? I enjoy hiking alone, and am perfectly capable, but would prefer to join someone who has already got experience doing this trip. Hopefully this forum knows me enough by now to know that I am a competent backpacker and that someone who is already planning to do this would be willing to take TGO fledgling under their wing.

I'm toying with doing it again, maybe in a group if I can convince others, I think holidays are short for me next year though so i need to check plans.

It's a very social experience, or can be if you want it to be, you'll soon hook up with folk along the way even if you did technically start out solo.

Sounds like you and I may run into each other a lot at this point

I think TGO challenge criteria says participants aren't allowed to take dogs?
    If it's a deal breaker...

Yeh I remember reading this, family/friends plus let's let join you for sections I think but not the entire trip.

I have family and friends in the UK who are fighting each other to dog sit.

Not going to break the rules, but what would happen to a participant if they did bring a dog?

I might be; depends on work.

I imagine they'd be deemed to be no longer a participant by TGO control as soon as they found out ( which wouldn't take long - the event is a collaborative affair). Therefore not covered for help/event insurance etc, or welcome at the finish. The rule must be there for a reason - insurance/liability issues I'd guess.

Good morning all, @DuneElliot I too have just signed up and was delighted to hear that I was accepted into the draw. It will be my first TGO and while I can't help you in your search for someone to 'take you under your wing', I thought that I'd share my excitement and wish you the best of luck in the draw.

If you take one of the more popular routes, then you’ll meet plenty of people. Route selection can be a bit daunting for a first timer, but if you go to the TGO Challenge website you will find a lot of blog trip reports to give you some ideas https://www.tgochallenge.co.uk/challengers-blogs-and-photos/ My blog has posts on my Challenges and maps of my routes https://blogpackinglight.wordpress.com/trip-diaries/ .

The Challenge message board is also another useful resource and members are generally pretty friendly and will answer any questions (as will the organisers Ali and Sue). If you have specific route questions many of the vetters keep an eye on the Notice Board and will answer queries. Lastly, quite a few members of Trek-Lite have done the Challenge and will be happy to help.

Don’t be afraid to do it solo. If you do the “trade routes”, there will be other people to hookup with. I recommend starting at a popular start point like Shiel Bridge and taking a mainly low level route. Not set in stone, but it looks unlikely that I will be able to do the Challenge next year due to my wife’s ongoing health issues.

That's what I figured. I wouldn't be bringing one to try and get around the rules, I was just curious. The longest I've done with my dogs was 80 miles...I wouldn't do anything much longer. Plus with Scottish weather and rain...who wants wet dogs in the tent?

Thank you. We'll see what happens.

Thanks. I will check out your blog. I read one; backpackartist which was really good and helpful.

I will head over to the Notice Board and have a look

No idea. I would want to make it a shorter, easier trip for my first one I think...I liked the above blog I mentioned doing a castle to castle trip in 2017...Dornie Castle to Red Castle.

@DuneElliot I have applied to participate again this year after completing Mallaig - St. Cyrus on the last challenge. I have had a few thoughts about my start point and am looking at Dornie due to the available transport links from Inverness airport.
I think this year will be well over subscribed as it is the 40th anniversary so will wait to see if I get a place before making any further plans.
Happy to share a route with yourself and / or others. (except @gixer, sorry mate we want decent weather.)

Dornie is a lovely start point. Have a look at Alan Sloman’s blog for an alternative first day. Mind you, the Falls of Glomach are wonderful too.

I take it that he is the bringer of rain on every trip?

It looked nice from the photos. Heck, the whole thing looked amazing

Not just rain but wind too - lots of it :).
And he repeats it almost every year when he comes for his annual Lake District tramp :D:D. Take note of the date ;).

Camping out in these conditions (- when everyone else has taken cover), and getting your nice new cuben fiber tent shredded - is known as "doing a @gixer "
he may even be a bit proud of the label :whistling:

We may cross paths again, also looking at Dornie after Mallaig this year...;) What's the chance of 13 days of sunshine in Scotland 2 years in a row?

Looks like it could be a trek-lite meet in Dornie:eek:

Gt my official email today that my application was accepted...now just need to wait to hear. I liked that the email was so personal...they liked my extensive backpacking experience, even if it is in the US
