The Best Winter Tent Set Up

3F recently brought out a new 3F T door design 4 seasons inner tent which should be compatible with a number of Pyramid style tents. These include Golite Shangri-La 3 /SL3/Hex, MyTrail Pyramid 3, Eureka/Nigor WickiUp3, 3F Pyramid and hopefully the Hexpeak, Seek Outside and the Tipi Knot style.

Ideal for bad weather, my experience of a Hex Mid is it sheds the wind much better than the 4 sided Mids you can get.

A problem with trips in the dead of winter can be those looooong 14 hour nights in the cramped conditions of a solo inner. Bothies or Refuge Huts may not be close by, trying to have a conversation with the neighbouring tent can be difficult, some may view this as a good thing….:angelic:

Set Up with Golite SL3 Fly, T Inner Doors with mesh vents at the top

    Great sized porch

Good separation between fly and solid walled inner

    Inner T Doors open

Probably the standard sleeping set up for 2 people (shows 2 full size mats not inflated)

Decent storage space at the back

This is where I see it being most use, a communal area for the loooong winter nights, you can eject people to their own tent when the conversation gets boring...(around 4:30pm usually...)

Internally, when flysheet door is closed. Plenty space for cooking

Internal space as a communal area, proper sitting up space

Plenty of room at the apex, any issue in this fitting Hexpeaks etc?...

    Strut corners, really well made

A couple of pics without the flysheet so you can see it better but note it has sagged from slipping down the centre pole

This inner with an SL3 fly - a bomber winter palace for 1.5Kg (all in) for one or two. The quality of the workmanship on this is the best I’ve seen yet from 3F and it fits perfect. Very impressed and a bargain price.

Many solo inners will fit for a lighter summer option e.g. 3F T-Door Solo Inner

I asked the dogs opinion…she seemed happy too….

Looks like a great space as you say, I might have to venture into another mid, fell out of love but my alternative isn't cutting the mustard :(

I've been through the same process, you look for something new fangled, and realise you can't find anything better.

Maybe something for summer that's a bit lighter when there's less need for space but can't beat this for space and stability. You can sit up on your knees without stooping.

It certainly looks like a great inner with a very competitive price. Much better than the hexagonal ones that leave you no porch.

Oh well, that's one more inner heading my way. I think I'm sorted now. :bag:

Not the first time @el manana will be blamed for pointing out good deals and thus furthering the cause of consumerism. ;)

    always glad to help.

Fits the hex pyramid great, with the demise of Oook this sort of thing with solid walls will be harder to come by.

He told me it's a one off batch of 20, but said the same about the solo inners, and had a change of heart when they sold like hot cakes.

It's probably the best workmanship and design I've seen from 3F , although the t-door strut corner solo inner was also pretty good. Groundsheet quality seems good, never had problems, the solid wall don't appear to have a DWR coating or the high quality of places like Trekkertent but still decent enough.

@el manana do you reckon it'll fit in a Hexpeak V4A?

I hope so, I'll find it out as soon as the inner arrives  and let you guys know

I've never seen a Hexpeak, but the dimensions look comparable?...

There's a really decent separation between fly and inner when pitched with an SL3, and there's space in the apex for cinching. Hope @the wizard can report back and post pics, it arrived bang on 20 days (although tracking said it was still at the Chinese export depot...)

    It will fit the 3F SL3 @Diddi

Are the Hexpeak V4s regarded as better than the Hex/SL3?
  17. the wizard

    the wizard Backpacker

The Hexpeak v4 has I think the same ground floor dimensions as the SL3, maybe even a bit bigger, but the height is a bit lower (140 cm against 160 cm) so that could be a problem. The fly is 40D silnylon compared with 15D from the 3F SL3. It has only one vent instead of two.
The 3F inner will def. fit in the Hexpeak F6.

You're right. I see the height of the new inner is stated as 138cm, which is pretty much the same height as the V4A's fly (137-140cm). Could be awkward unless some cinching of the inner is possible at the apex, and if that doesn't affect the 'set' of the inner.

The ground dimensions would appear compatible though.

    Hmm.

If height turns out to be a problem, a loop of shockcord with a toggle around the apex may work - see attached post.

@the wizard if it doesnt fit your Hexpeak v4 I might bi interested buying it from you for my original SL3. Report back on the fit.

I've been trying to order(buy) one of these for the past couple of days but I'm having no joy...The buy now or add to cart options don't appear to be working (for me)...Anyone having similar problems?

It worked fine for me. I have bought the smaller inner from this seller and it is great value and quality. I’m tempted by the double inner to fit my Shangri-La.
