No idea if any one will be interested in playing along but...

Thought it might be interesting to design a UL pack between us all and assuming we have a clue what we're talking about, and we can (pretty much) agree on a design, I'll have a go at building one.

As a bit of a primer the type of pack I have in mind is a frameless UL pack that's circa 400g tops, usual set up of two shoulder straps, simple hip belt (if any), but beyond that it's pretty much up to us all to decide on something.

Fabric wise I'd rather order from europe where possible using something along the lines of dyneema x or x-pac, or I guess maybe cuben from z-packs.

Assuming it works out ok I'll stick in on eBay with no reserve, give half the sale value to charity and keep the other half towards my costs.

I've got a couple more to build before I'd be able to get started on the actual build but no doubt it'll take us a while to discuss the design.

    Yeah nice idea Matt

In no particular order, things I look for in a pack are ..

    • Minimal straps and dangly bits
    • Weather resistant fabric
    • Single main body compartment, no lid and no zips
    • Stretch pocket on front of main body
    • Roll down top closure with top strap
    • Two side pockets, deep enough to take a 1L bottle
    • No too bothered about a hip belt unless it's 50L +
    • A pocket or pockets for snacks & compass, on shoudler strap or hip belt
    • Somewhere I can attach my rolled up map case, a couple of shockcord loops on a shoulder strap works

I like a stretch fabric pocket on shoulder strap for phone/GPS.

Silnylon hip pockets so trail mix can go in unlined.

Spacer mesh on everything that touches skin

Side pockets that'll fit 1l bottle and waterproofs, ie pretty big

Fittings that would allow the fitting of say 8mm carbon fiber rods for days when you have to carry lots of water etc

Good sternum strap, with elastic bit on webbing ( not just elastic like montane ultra, limp ass elastic as well!)

    Line loc load lifters

P.S there is definitely a gap in the market for a UK made cuben shelter
    Maker..... just sayin:rolleyes:

    Nice idea
1 piece roll top main compartment
Shoulder straps with daisy chain set up
    Sternum strap
Minimal padded hip belt (to loosen shoulder straps & ride weight off hips on flats)
2 stretch woven side pockets 1-1.5L
1 stretch woven front pocket 5-8L
1 stretch woven overlapped base pocket
& maybe a sleeve inside at the back to fit a folded sleeping mat into.
I've probably gone over the 400gr :( But I'd buy it :angelic:

    Very interesting.

    Single main compartment.
    Water pockets on the side.
Shoulder strap pouches, or set up to attach the Tread-lite ones already have.
    (Removeable)Sternum strap.
    (Removeable)minimal waist belt
    Roll top
Big mesh pocket on the back.
    35l - 45l
    Moon on stick.

A Quickstep with ULA side pockets and a gusseted solid fabric pocket where the stretch one is located.

Nice idea, here's my initial thoughts (getting a consensus will be interesting here), again, in no particular order:
    • 35-45 litres
    • A simple lid with zipped pocket (I can see the flexibility of roll top, but I find a lid pocket useful)
    • Two side pockets each big enough for a bottle (mesh, solid, I'm not fussed)
    • Stretch mesh pocket on front of main body
    • Stretch mesh pockets on shoulder straps for phone, gps, or compass
    • Compression in some manner to keep it all snug
    • Removable hip belt with a pocket each side
    • Some way to securely attach walking poles to the pack for town/transit
    • Minimal clutter, dangly straps etc
Have to admit though that I'm still pretty happy with my Berghaus Hyper 37

Actually you could just copy the Pa'lante Simple but add provision for a detachable waist belt and I'd probably be drooling.

    Reality check:

    1) More features = lighter body material if you're to stay under 400g.
    2) Consensus means options, and therefore more attachment points.

Thanks for the comments so far, good to see there's a little interest in this.

Maybe it'd be best if we go through the pack bit by bit and see what we end up with?

For no reason what so ever let's start with the shoulder straps, for the basic strap shape etc maybe something along the lines of these ones I made recently?

    IMG_2868.jpg

Gentle S shape, 5mm internal padding, approx 70mm wide, 4mm spacer mesh, face fabric tbc. Attached to the pack at an angle so they fit the shoulders better.

Thoughts re webbing/daisy chain - Full/half length/none? Removable elasticated emergency whistle sternum strap to attach to the webbing sound ok?

Pockets - built in or just add your own/none?

Attachment Line running to the pack? More traditional webbing/buckle or Cord/LL3

Empty shoulder straps I can stuff spare socks into would be fine.
  16. Padstowe

I think its good to have the points to attach pockets for added options.
The Cord/LL3 option sounds intriguing for the straps, but I'd be worried that certain movements could lift the lock & slip the cord?

Starting to think opening this up to a pretty much infinite amount of options might not be the best way to go if we're ever to get anywhere  Perhaps if people could answer the following it might help, or does that just spoil the fun?
