Trek-Lite Deal: A Hyper Efficient DIY Stove for HX Pots

We released information on how to create your own Stove/HX system (JetBoil Stash knock off). Using a Fire Maple 300t (or clone) with an Inferno HX mug as a base, you can make a plate that will allow you to efficiently couple these components together. Initial fuel efficiency looks very good (2 cups 70 F water boiled using ~4 grams of isobutane) and the wind resistance looks very promising.

If you make your own burner plate, you can put a kit together that will cost less than 1/2 the amount of a JetBoil Stash and have better fuel efficiency (and weigh less). Total weight with the Imusa replacement lid: 188 grams (6.6 oz). Additionally, the Sterno Inferno kit can be used with alcohol stoves as well.

For those of you without the tools and ability to manufacture the plate, we decided to offer the plate on our website. Additionally, we have also created a Trek-Lite special version of this burner plate. For $27.50 (including shipping), you will be sent a bare bones burner plate. You will need to smooth all of the edges (file / steel wool) and bend up three tabs. And, if you send us detailed feedback on your opinion of this system, you will receive a $5 rebate as well. To purchase this burner plate, click on the hyperlink and scroll to the bottom of the page: Trek-Lite Special. This offer will be good until the end of March 2021

Ive just stripped a Pocket Rocket 2 of it’s legs. I then took a Jetboil burner apart to use the plate - it works.

The burner head extends by approximately 20mm above the plate too the top of the wind clip - would this work with your plate and Sterno Inferno pot, or is the head to tall?

I think that it is too tall for teh Inferno. On that mug, the distance from teh bottom of the HX to the bottom of the mug is 1" That is almost the same distance on the Fire Maple 300t: burner head to arm support is 0.95". I thought about how I would use the PocketRocket2 and it would be a similar approach. Remove the legs and use the screw locations to attach tabs, size the tabs for the optimal head to bottom of the mug height. My 2 cents.

I'd love one of them steno inferno systems to try it out but they don't ship to Ireland, not even to the north. :(

In the system above, or ten PR2 idea, I assume the plate will fit inside the pot - it’s a sort of semi-permanent set up?

I’ll stop asking questions, this is your pitch

It will fit inside the mug. I myself, would leave it full asssembled. If you wanted to, you can take it apart for more storage volume. When apart, you can fit a small fuel canister inside as well. If you take it apart, you have teh probablility of losing a nut, additionally, the threads were probably not designed for repeatative use. For the PR2, I would spot weld on tabs that hang down from the plate to optimize the burner head to botom of the mig height. The JetBoil Bottom the HX to the bottom of the pot may vary model t model. My 2 cents

Were you looking at Amazon US? They'll ship it to Turkey, though not to the UK.
Edit: Just looked again and they now ship to the UK too, and to Ireland. (Screenshot added below as I can't get the photo to work in the edit box.)

If you buy it on Amazon UK, it comes with free shipping from the US. But only if you are in the UK.

The shipping is factored into the price ($27.74 + $10.43 shipping to the UK from Amazon US vs an equivalent £25.38 from Amazon UK). From Amazon US to Ireland, there is an extra $11 or so due to customs charges (it's slightly less to Turkey), which for some reason aren't applied to the UK.

Nice system @Jon Fong. I'd be tempted to try it out if I didn't already have an Ocelot for the Soto Windmaster. I guess it is difficult to compare, but would you rate the effect of wind on the two systems as broadly comparable? Looking at your tests (HX system and the Pocket Rocket deluxe as surrogate for the Windmaster) they seem similar at first glance (~50% increased consumption at 3mph)

My missus bought me a Sterno Inferno kit off Amazon for my birthday. It came in a week. Ordered on 5th Feb, delivered on the 12th. Cost: £24.74

Thanks just looked at amazon.com, be around €40 (bit less) with exchange rates, only around €33.67 from amazon.de, who don't deliver here either. :(
If it is still cost efficient, Shop it to me, I'll send it on to yers
Thanks for the kind offer, be about €5 less after the reship without accounting for any customs, but don't think there is any. I'll probably go for the US one just for handiness sake. But thanks again.

I believe that the Inferno configured as shown may be more fuel efficent. In calm conditions, I was getting 2 cups of 70 F to boil using 4 grams of fuel
That being siad, I myself prefer the Ocelot Soto system. The reason being that I don't just boil water, I cook on the trail. HX pots are great for boiling but have hot spots making it impractical for simmering thicker soups or baking. My 2 cents.

@Jon Fong I'm very interested in this. I recently got a Sterno Inferno and I have a trip (hopefully) coming up where having multiple fuel options would be a good thing. Am I right in thinking my Alpkit Kraku is essentially a rebadged Fire Maple stove?

Others would know better, I have never seen an Alpine Kraku before.

Yes it's the exact same stove. By fire maple

Several ( many?) companies sell stoves made for them by Fire Maple.

Robens also do their version in the UK.
