Walking apps

Been trawling through the apps available and can't decide what would be best for my needs. I just want to record my walks including distance, time, elevation etc. using gps. Not interested in any sharing with a community and minimal or no ads. What would be the best in anyone's opinion.

Android or IOS?

Sorry, Android
Locus Pro would get my vote. I don't hike in the UK so I don't know about the mapping options but it is an app that does a lot. Be aware that recording a walk will use up a lot of battery on a smartphone no matter which app you're using. A stand alone GPS device, such as the Garmin Etrex range, will be much better that way.

Wish to point out that I only want to keep a record and not bothered about navigation

Me too; I've used Locus extensively for a few years and like it.

It might be deemed 'overkill' for your purposes, but so would most apps as they will do a lot lot more than many users will ever need.

Tend to take my Etrex 10 for that, no map but records a gpx file I can use on my phone or laptop.

I grabbed one on eBay for £40 recently, I like that they take AA batts which are easy to find in most places.
I’ll probably use it on the bike more than hiking but we’ll see

They also cope well with rechargeable batteries which is useful.

I don't use an app - I have a Suunto GPS watch. Its lightweight and records the route for download to my phone later.

Don't see the point anymore for a separate device or having my phone to hand.

Same here. Although I do sync it to Strava.

I use OS Maps to find/plot routes.
