When is 60 litres not sixty liters

Lightwave ultrahike arrived today. Loaded my usual base weight items and had plenty of extra space. Same items in my GG Mariposa and it's a tight fit. Both rated at 60 litres capacity. No idea which one is more accurate. Anyone with a view?

No view as such, never used a Mariposa. Have had an Ultrahike for about five years and really like it. I can get everything I need for a two week trip in, including food and it's still a comfortable carry. Use an OMM classic or an Atompack for shorter trips.

GG call the whole rucksack. That is internal, bottle and back pocket. The other probably calls the large internal cavity only. There is no industry standard. You always have to look at the breakdown of the rucksack in the specs to get the internal cavity dimensions. Plus you will often get the bottle pockets and the rear pocket volumes. Often done by US cottage makers.
Some makers are even a bit 'generous' with their volumes.

My ZPacks Arc Haul is 62l (60l?), but that's only 42l main compartment, and 20l in side pockets, front pocket and extension collar.

My Osprey Aura 50l holds more in the main compartment so that 50l bag doesn't include the pockets, and at 50l is too big for my needs

One including side & top pockets, the other just the main compartment?
This was my disappointing experience with the Kelty Redwing 40, six of those litres are in the pockets, I reckon, making the main compartment tall and narrow. Yet even small water bottles fell out of the side pockets. Happier with the Osprey Talon. The Redwing is now my emergency "go-bag".
