Which Gehwol?

I've seen folks here recommend Gehwol as a product that can help reduce hot spots and blistering on feet. I'm just wondering which Gehwol you're using as there seems to be a number of different products under that "brand" name.

TIA

I used one tube a few years ago, but apart from the smell and nice feeling, didn't feel it did anything amazing more than vaseline

If my feet are not in "trail condition" or it's likely to be wet, I rub vaseline into the drier/harder parts of my feet and between the toes. More recently, Vicks ( or a cheap supermarket copy) as recommended somewhere. It's just vaseline with menthol really.

Having spent two days with constantly wet feet recently and rinsing out Peak District bog from my shoes every couple of hours, I'm interested in this!

@Mole do you put the vaseline on before going out? Anything at the end of the day?

@edh do you have a recipe or a link?

Is it just a lubricant then?

I'm testing out different socks and footwear on 10-15 mile fast hikes (pushing along at 3.5-4 MPH) on Land Rover tracks. My feet get pretty hot doing this for three or four hours with no break. We all say all footwear is a compromise and I had come to the conclusion that one particular setup (non-GTX trail shoes) was my favorite and then the weekend before last, 2 miles from home the heavens opened and I got drenched, not really a problem as I'd be home in half an hour but ... my feet that had been feeling fine very quickly got hot spots on the ball of my feet and very sore. They felt like if I had 6 miles to do I'd be getting blisters. If I'm going to settle on those shoes I'm going to need to do something for when this happens and that is why I started thinking about Gehwol.

I do it in the morning when feet are nice n dry and absorb it better.

I only get a hot spot or blister in one place on my feet - centre forefoot pad. ( It used to be bad years ago until I worked out how to manage wet feet better) . It's only occasionally a problem these days if I hit hard trails or roads early on in a trip. I tend to pre-empt it on long trips by putting a small compeed there for a few days, then it seems to sort itself out.

Later in a trip heel edges n pads can get sore if they get wet a lot, but the vaseline seems to help a lot.

See previous post...
I guess a lubricant, but also makes pads more supple and waterproofs them somewhat?

Is vaseline messy?
My dry feet ( n outdoor worker fingersn thumb) seem to just suck it up.

I thought Lanacane was for itching? It's got benzocaine in it? Or is there a different sort?

That's ok I only use a 15ml tub about twice a year. on my feet.

I suspect the alcohol I drink has magnitudes more effect on my health.

Lanacane gel for anti chafing. Stops friction. Never tried it on feet but if friction is the cause it might work. Just a suggestion ;)

Gehwol 75ml Foot Cream, Strengthens Skin to Prevent Blisters https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000KOQ85M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_xZsKFbZ4YZTRA?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

to answer the original question about Gehwol, it’s this one that has the water resistant protective qualities. The one with blue and white pacKagîg is just a moisturiser.
I’m a little surprised at Ed’s report because I would have expected the carrier to be much more important than the smell. It’s the viscosity of the cream that stops it being rubbed off I to your sock and the « whatever « quality (not sure how to describe) that makes it water resistant, it’s most important quality. I think it’s excellent stuff and quite unlike the many other potions and lotions in my cupboard which are beauty carriers :p

The Gewohl extra is much better ime than the normal gewohl.
Like many, my feet could make a Rat run away in disgust but using the extra makes them smell of Gewohl instead of the sweaty death stench for a few days. Seems to help with skin condition too.
I forgot my Chamois cream a few weeks ago and used the Gewohl instead...didnt work as well. :)

I usually start out with some OK cream (made it myself) but when that runs out I use whatever I can find....generally delightfully fragranced body lotions from 3rd rate Otels :angelic:

Those cheapo hotel lotions will be far worse than a bit of petroleum jelly.
Full of all sorts of chemicals (parabens like some of Gehwohls range) and easily absorbed by design. ;)
