What are people using for this these days and how do they find the service levels?

I used to use Bluehost; they still come out well in reviews...but just wondering what the alternatives are - and users opinion is handy?

My needs are basic, I'll not be needing a managed service:

Pretty high storage - images and research data
    No commercial plans
    Low traffic

I’ve used the Wordpress free version for my blog since inception and found it really easy to use. Loads of templates and enough features for me. Always been reliable and there’s a mobile version too.

same here. seems cheap (3GB storage) otherwise you need to pay. We host our photos on flickr and cross-link for several reasons, one is it keeps the storage down.

Cheers. The 3GB storage would not be enough I think - but I'll take a look.

I do exactly the same. I store all my photos on Flikr and just insert them into my blog from there....very simple and easy to do. Even Wordpress' paid-for plans don't have a lot of storage space. I like their ease of use and simplicity and choice of templates.

Even after 11 years I’ve only used 35% of my allocated space

Well apart from my inveterate picture taking....

..I'll be storing videos which add up really quickly; so I'd expect maybe 30GB of data over a couple weeks...best think of cloud alternatives!

Host the vids on YouTube and embed them.
Mp4 even at 4k can be compressed a fair bit.

I use YouTube for videos, for the rare few I actually put on my blog...I don't know of many other video storage hosts that will give you that kind of storage without having to cough up a LOT of money

Not a big You Tube user.

But I see that you can make video private which would work...

You have 3 options with YouTube videos. They can be public, unlisted and private. Public is visible anyone searching/visiting your channel, unlisted requires the user to know the exact URL to access it and private is only visible to the owner of the channel. Using unlisted mode is a great way to share videos with friends only etc.
