Johny-come-lately Head Torch

i have an embarrassing collection of headtorches but suspect they are becoming more and more dated.

What’s the collective wisdom on the latest head torch selections? I don’t really want something that is programmable or ‘interactive’, just something that can carve a hole in the night, and the occasional retina.

I think gixer wrote that bible.
I know nothing, but I have a folomov edc c4 which I quite like, can be usb mini charged and used as a power bank. I think gixer considers this potentially dangerous. No problems so far for me, it's efficiency at charging my phone wasn't good though. I blame the supplied cable.

I ended up with
Zebralight H600w Mk2 XHP35
But they are a bit of a minefield.

a quick pivot of that data sorted by length to aid identification. Updated with gram weights, cm length and removed red/green models

I've found this to be more than adequate for my use, its only 1050Lum in turbo though, :(
but I only really switch that on for the **** me that's bright factor it gives :)

It is cool white so can have a bit more glare off it if on high & the micro usb port on the battery can be a bit fiddly, which made me think it wouldn't last, but seems fine so for & its handy just being able to charge the battery straight.
I have 2 now :angelic:

@Padstowe I've got one of them too. It's OK isn't it. The on battery charger I guess is safer than in torch but still gives the advantage of not needing a charger.

I love my Zebralight - well made and not over complicated.
Cannot remember which exact model - but warm light and takes the smaller CR123 batteries - I wanted less weight and wasn't as bothered about lumens or how long the power would last.

The thing with with Torches is that they don't have a built in red LED, which I like at night

The other thing is you don't need monster power. For normal night time walking you'd be amazed at how little power you need in non technical ground, and then only maybe a hundred on technical ground

My mountain bike lights pump out loads of lumens but even then I usually have them on low

For me a petzl e-lite is doable lowland night hiking but it's borderline. I recon 70lum? Would be a comfy minimum for me, always a balance with battery life and weight etc. One bonus of the e-lite is that a spare batteries weigh 2.9g each and disappear into a ditty bag.
Less of an issue now probably most of us carry a power bank though.

I find that there are sooooooooooo many variables with torch beams that it's pointless talking only about lumen output

100 lumens from a diffused floody beam is a LOT different than 100 lumens from a thin throw type beam

Then there is beam quality, terrain, ambient light, users age/eyesight and million other things

So one person judging what someone else "needs" is vague enough to be pointless

Often see people talk about a torch being too bright
Makes absolutely zero sense

There are not many torches being sold today that are not adjustable output wise, so for normal running you can set whatever output you want
IF the torch has a higher output setting it just sits there waiting in case you need more oumphhh

My H600 mkIV was bought primarily for it's well proven reliablity and low light output (1 lumen), beam spread, energy density of the cell and colour of beam were also important.

The 1600 odd Lumens are just a bonus..hardly ever used, but very handy sometimes for trying to pick out a stile/gate etc in the distance when your off trail and need to cross a wall/fence etc.
